I need someone that can edit for style, grammar, clarity and inconsistencies. Is that something you can do? If so, how can we get started?

Where are you located? England, Canada, the United States, and Australia, and I'm sure other countries as well, have societies for professional editors. These groups can help you find an editor appropriate to yor needs.

Although I have said this before, it seems not to have made any impact, so I'll repeat myself:

You must identify the genre of your book when asking for editor recommendations. For example, although I have been a professional editor for 28 years, I could not edit a mystery novel. My "expertise" lies in wholly different arenas (nonfiction medical and education). If you are writing an historical romance, you want an editor with experience editing historical romances, not an editor whose experience lies in fantasy/alternative history. Few professional editors will claim the ability to edit anything and those that do make such a claim may be able to do so, but I would view that with skepticism (jack of all trades, master of none).

I'm in the United States. It's a non-fiction how-to kind of book.

I don't check facts, you would need to do that yourself.

What are you talking about? I was just clarifying the country I live in, and the genre of the book, per rhadin's last comment. Where/when did I ask for you to check facts?

I feel like I'm pulling teeth . Saying the book is nonfiction and how-to doesn't provide enough information to say John Smith is the editor you are looking for. If it is a how-to mow your lawn book, you want an editor familiar with gardening and landscaping; if it is a how-to find hidden treasure in foreclosed homes, you might want someone familiar with construction. Hopefully you get the idea. When you ask for recommendations for editors, you need to provide a significant amount of detail information in order to locate the right professional editor for your project.

I suggest you visit the Editorial Freelancers Association's website and look for an editor in their directory. Here is the link: http://www.the-efa.org/dir/search.php.

Just making sure, with it being a how-to book.

Seriously though... I write Spec Fic... so if I wanted to go find an editor, to do POST-proof reading editing for style, flow, and story consistency type things, how would I do it? My wife does an excellent job of the proof reading kind of editing, so it would not need that, or much there of.

I would locate the professional editor's society/organization in your country and inquire there for an editor. They usually have a jobs board and/or a membership directory. You can post your job on the jobs board or take a stroll through the member directory and then contact editors who interest you.
