I'm thinking about giving this series another shot, as after reading the first 72 pages, I've put it on hold indefinitely. The names used for the characters are just too distracting. He just mutated real names, making them more dificult to read. Really, it just made me struggle to read the names and remember who is who. I've liked very much the beggining, though. But back to the story's present, the pace of my reading was reduced to a crawl. At the time I was reading it only at night, before sleeping, when my brain was too sleepy. So I'll give it another shot, once I finish Brent Weeks or Peter Brett's books. |

I also found the names somewhat distracting at first but eventually got used to them. Considering the characters are descendants of Earth folk, to my mind Weber could have kept traditional spelling.

What's exceptionally annoying is that place names didn't change. I would think those would shift as well.

I really enjoyed the initial volume, but was starting to feel a bit meh about the series. I just finished reading vol 5 "How Firm A Foundation", and David Weber has added a few interesting twists - now eagerly awaiting vol 6.

I wonder though, how long he intends to keep the series running? After final victory is won, are there going to be other books further into the future dealing with the outward reach to the stars and taking on the aliens that virtually exterminated humanity? Unfortunately I always find other books to read instead of this series, but I am still buying them as Weber releases another volume in the series. |

I can see it now -- the series will merge with the Honor Harrington series. During a holiday, Honor falls into what is believed to be a coma but in reality is an out-of-skin experience that enables her to discover this planet that is threatened by an alien species and unable to defend itself because it is a throwback. Merlin realizes that Safehold's ultimate survival depends on the Manticore Kingdom, especially Honor, and so devises to preserve Honor just as Merlin was preserved. Now Honor and Merlin together can save humankind from the ravages of the aliens and the Mesans. I foresee a 99-volume series. Weber will deliberately choose not to release a 100th volume so as to preserve his interstellar dignity. He will conclude volume 99 with Merlin and Honor suddenly revealing a long-time lesbian relationship that now ends as their mechanical bodies fail. It's a winner! Sign me up (or is that beam me up ) |

Seems rather more than unlikely, given that they are published by two very different publishers.

Good series. I've been buying every book as it's appeared and am very much enjoying it.

I have just finished the fourth book and I'm enjoying them. Besides the names, of course. I could accept having names like Arghahaghlk. But you can have someone called Bwahaharg and in the next page he's called Baron Good Listener, who is talking to Baron Quite Sympathetic and Count Egg Yolks. I have given up on trying to remember who's who. By the way, has anybody read "Helm", by Stephen Gould? (that's the guy who wrote "Jumper"). I thinks it's quite clear Weber got a lot of ideas and inspiration from that book. |
