Kindle Fire For Kids/Tweens/Teens

Hello!

My 11 year old has decided on a Kindle Fire as the preferred "big" Christmas present instead of the identically priced iPod Touch.

I know there are no formal parental controls for the Fire, but my kids know that everything going through the home wireless is monitored, so I am not particularly worried about unauthorized web location surfing.

However, I don't want my child (or any visiting friends, for that matter) to be able to see every book I've ever bought for my own Kindle. Nor do I want the Fire to have any ability to purchase from Amazon without my permission.

So my main question is how best to set up the Amazon account for this particular device?

Does anyone have any specific advice on settings for a Kindle that will be used primarily by a child?

I want to be able to add book titles that I do approve to this device. As of yet, I am not sure how often that will be, though.

I am a relatively new Kindle user, so my current experience is limited.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

The only thing you can do is give them an account of their own. The apps store does have a pin you can set up now but that's the only parental control I know of.

There is a parental control app for the fire in the app store and the best thing is it's free.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...cm_cd_asin_lnk

Thank Bufo Calvin he found it and announced it on the Amazon Kindle Forum.

Thank you! That app will be very helpful for my phone as well, since all my kids like playing games on it, but I don't want them seeing all my text discussions, etc.

I think if you go into your account settings you can control which books are sent to which devices. Go to "Manage Your Kindle" and check that out.

I think this is the best option.

On the Kindle Fire, all books show up in cloud, even if you don't send it to the device. All books, whether on your KF or not will show up on the carousel in the home book.

This is why they need their own account. I wouldn't let a Kid near my Fire! My carousel has some rather racy images of Ellora and Samhain books I got for free.

Lol. I don't have anything racy. I don't mind handing it to my kids. I just show them how to go to apps & then they go to the games they want.

Luckily no Kids here just two cats who know to stay away from my stuff. However when I go to visit the in-laws..... I'm not sure how to explain that to them.

Locking down the Kindle for kids use

Hi, I'm one of the developers of the kid lockdown app mentioned earlier in the thread (Kids Place). Right now the app allows you to create a safe area on your Kindle (or other Android device) which restricts your child to only those apps you have set up. It has some other features like preventing the child from answering the phone and auto restart of apps so you don't need to be bothered restarting them if you have really young ones.

We are constantly looking to improve the app so if you have some suggestions I'm all ears! Thanks

Bob Riley

Hey, it's a great app! I've got it on my Fire, and recommended it to my sister because her young granddaughter plays with her Fire. My main suggestion for improvement would be to make the icons on the Kids Place homepage a lot larger, because I'm old. And I think if they were larger, kids might have an easier time selecting them, too. I really like the app, though -- thanks for providing it!

I'm glad you like it We are shooting for a new release in about 5 days, with one of the features being an increase in icon size for the Fire and other tablets.

In a release after that (~3-4 weeks) we're planning on including the option of REALLY big icons for those of you with toddlers.

That will be great. My 2 yr old niece played with my Fire last night for a long time, and your app kept her where she was supposed to be!
