Screen protector film

What do most people do with the screen protector film the Vox ships with? Normally, when I unpack any electronic device or appliance, the first thing I do is rip off the soft plastic protective film on the shiny parts and screens. Other people leave the film on until it falls off like dead skin, like some people used to keep the cellophane on lampshades in the 1960s. The film on the Vox, however, is quite durable, but has a tab for removing it. It looks like it wasn't put on in a cleanroom because there are a few dust blisters. I'll be leaving mine on until it has blemishes that become distracting. Too bad it doesn't have a matte finish.

I make so much fun of my Dad for leaving these on EVERYTHING! There is no way I could have left mine off without feeling like a hypocrite. I usually leave this in the box in case I need to return it or retrieve it for any reason.

That being said, I could really use a good screen protector film!

Here's one:

http://www.shopereaders.com/product-...creen-prot.htm

There's also a long thread on them in the Kobo forum that I haven't read yet.

I purchased the WriteRight (made by Fellowes) Universal Screen Protector (anti-scratch + anti-glare) at Staples that installs easily and works great. It comes as a 2 pack for around $20 designed to be cut to fit for all tablet sizes. The backing paper includes a numbered alignment grid to make it simple to see what lines you will cut on. It cleans up fast and it does reduce reflected glare nicely. I have my son's Vox to compare, and it is noticeably easier on the eyes with bright backlighting. I am very pleased as a result.

What do you guys do to your screens to need a screen protector? The screen is glass. If it gets dirty, wipe it down.

Take our devices outside.

Unless you live in a clean room and never go out, you'll see dust, grit, sand, etc. Plus, some of the screen protector films are oleophobic. I use Ghost Armor, which works well against scratches and oils.

There's another thread on this forum about fingerprints on the glass screen. I suppose if that's a problem, then one could use a screen protector and replace it when it gets too decrepit. One with a matte surface would be nice to reduce reflections. However, from what I've seen of smartphone screen protectors, it's almost impossible to get one on without a single dust blister.

But, it's glass! If it gets dirty you wipe it once, maybe twice and it's perfectly clean.

Tell that to my phone, the bathroom mirror, my iPod, and my glasses. . You need a streak free cloth and a cleaner at the least, and whatever coatinsg you apply to glass to remove glare can retain oils quite well. Or even on its own, without oleophobic coatings. That's why Apple coats their iPhone (but not iPod) screens - not just to add $30 to the cost.

Also, glass scratches like nothing else, especially with all the debris wind carries being at least as hard as it.

Glass.... plain glass does not scratch easily. You have probably not had many things made of glass these days. Eye glasses are not because of the weight and breakability.
Many applications of glass have coating that do scratch easily.

I use high index Nikon glass for my glasses, my iPod uses some sort of borosilicate glass, IIRC, and my phone uses Gorilla Glass. The Nikon has an anti reflective and hydrophobic coating which means it needs soap and water to remove oils. The coating for Gorilla Gass is not oleophobic by any stretch of the imagination, and regular window glass needs microfiber or similar cloth to remove oils completely as you're just otherwise smearing it around instead of leaving it all in one discrete spot.

Most glass used outside of food serving purposes seems to be coated with one thing or another, especially in electronics for screens. It does not clean with just a simple rag - I have looked at them under good light and see greasy streaks, although they don't mess up the image unless there's sunlight or similarly bright illumination to get reflected from it.

That's why I use screen protectors which have oleophobic properties... as even the iPad isn't very oleophobic, no matter what Apple says about that. The reason they're so shiny in Apple Stores is because there's an associate with a microfiber cloth and spray cleaner wiping them down every fifteen minutes. I've watched.

Yes sir...:

Oleophobic coating treatments bonds with many different surfaces at the nano-scale to create oil resistant, anti-smudge coatings. Does anybody know if Kobo uses this, other than an anti-glare?
