some questions PC World couldn't answer

Hi all. Considering a PRS-T1 after my long-serving iLiad has sadly started to die.

Couple of things I couldn't resolve in the shop today, perhaps someone here can help.

1. Power down. Seems hard to turn off. I'd expect a long press on the power button would do it, but that didn't seem to work. Ideally I'd rather not navigate Am I missing something?

2. Off-screen. I like the idea of having the cover of the book I'm reading on the screen when it's off, but the demo one today didn't do it. The book which was loaded on there had a cover on the listings page, but it could just be a demo non-feature.

3. Power-up behaviour. One of the things I like about my iLiad is that I turn it on and it automatically opens my last-read book at the page I was at. Can the Sony be cajoled into doing this?

4. I'm assuming it plays nice with linux+calibre, no need for the Sony software? I do have a Windows machine if I really need to.

Any answers or advice much appreciated.

Hello. I’ve never had a reader before, but I’ve been very pleased with the T1.

1. You don’t normally completely power down, just press the on/off switch. If you do want to turn it off completely, you can do it through a menu, but there’s normally no need to do that.

2. You can set the screen to show the cover of the book you’re currently reading when it’s off (if you’ve done a complete power down, or if that has happened automatically because you haven’t used it for three days, you get a blank screen).

3. When you turn it on, it shows whatever was there before it turned off, so if you had a page of a book on the screen, it will come back to the same place. No cajoling needed .

4. I don’t know about Linux, but it’s perfectly happy with my Mac/Calibre set up. I did use the Sony Reader for the recent firmware update, and I think there’s going to be another one soon. But I don’t use their software to manage any of my books.

1 - not sure why you need to power down, in sleep mode it probably doesn't use any power. However I seem to remember reading that if its unused for 3 days it powers down.

2 - Edit - see post above

3 - if you've put it in sleep mode from the page you are reading, when you switch back on it will return to that page without going to the home screen

You can do it through Settings/ System Management/ Standby Screen/ Type of Image/Cover of Last Read.

hehe, me with my old-fashioned ideas about turning stuff off...

If I don't turn my iLiad off, it goes flat after about a day.

thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I'll probably pick one of these up tomorrow.

Powering completely off is only useful if you don't plan to pick up your reader for weeks on end. If you plan to pick up where you left off then putting it in sleep mode is best. And actually if you do a long press on the power button, it will ask if you want to completely turn off the reader. I've accidentally done that a few times and had to cancel out when I only wanted it to sleep.

With my mom's T1, I powered down with holding the power button. I powered down since this is a Christmas present and I was just setting it up. I just tested it again and it works. When you hold the power button a screen comes up asking if you want to completely shut down.

As a pp said above, you can set to show a book cover when asleep. You can also put in your own pictures to display.

Just remember, with the Sony software, to turn off the option for it to open automatically when the Reader is plugged in. Otherwise it gets annoying.

Also, it’s worth setting the Sony software not to sync anything so that if you need to connect to it for any reason (like a firmware update) it won’t mess anything up.

Does the T1 automatically go to stand by if it is not used? If so, how long before it goes to standby? I ask because I never use the power switch on my 650, I just let it go to standby after 10 minutes, but I wish I could make the time out longer.

I don’t think you can change the times. It goes into standby after 10 minutes, and sleep after three days.

Also, I notice that the Sony site gives instructions for updating the firmware without using the Reader software, so it should be possible to avoid it completely.

The PRS-models from Sony work great with Calibre, no hassle there. I don't have a T1, but I know that the Calibre developers added support for it recently, and I've seen posts here stating it works fine.
