Kindle DX ordered

I have the Kindle 3 (keyboard) wifi. I ordered the Kindle DX, due to aging eyes, and wanting a larger screen, and the price drop incentive.

I am a little nervous about sending my books that are from Calibre that was formatted for the 6" size to the 9.7" DX. Will I have to reformat my books?

I was reading on the forum you can send your books from the personal documents (for the other Kindle I own) to your DX. But you can't send directly from Calibre via email? They charge you?

I really didn't want the 3G without wireless, but I wanted the 9.7" screen. I hope I didn't make a mistake. I also am reading here about the older software. My main concern is the light flashing my eyes when the page turns. Since I have to turn pages alot because I have the largest print on the 6" K3, the flashing bothers my eyes in a dark room at night (with my booklight).

Next question is will one booklight cover the bigger size? I am getting nervous about this now. $259 is still alot of money to me.

Thanks for any info here.

Nope you don't have to reformat your books.

Yes you can send your books directly from calibre via email but after sending you have to manually resend the document from the amazon site personal documents section if you don't want to be charged.

Light flashing is still there unfortunately and a bit worse as the screen is larger.

It depends on your booklight. It surely needs a stronger one as it is much larger than kindle 3.

You did the right thing btw. I both used kindle 3 and kindle DXG and i would take the DXG any day.

Oh btw use dropbox it is a great thing for kindle.

You lost me. How do you do a dropbox?

Thanks for the other info. I was afraid the flashing would be the same on all of the models. I read the Kindle Touch has a refresh every 6 pages, but then it shadows or something.

I will miss the Sans Seriff font I just started using on the Kindle 3. The DX doesn't have that unless I modify the software, which I don't want to try. That never never works for me.

First create an account on dropbox (my signature will help you on that), then download the calibre (which is a great e-book library organizer). Then point your calibre library to the dropbox folder on your computer. You can then visit the dropbox site on your kindle and download the books from your calibre library.

Also the loading 3.x.x firmwares on kindle DXG hack is a very simple one. It is brick-proof. In fact it is much safer than the original firmware as it installs a recovery kernel which helps you to get your kindle running without serial port connection if something goes wrong. I recommend it to everyone. It is good to use sans serif font on kindle DXG plus lots of features which amazon never delivered to us poor kindle DXG users.

I have Calibre and I love it. But how do you access anything from the DX on the Dropbox? Through the experimental browser? Do you get charged for doing this? I have never understood why Amazon charges the 3G to transfer books via email.

Why do you love DX better than the Kindle 3? I am hoping less page turns will be less offensive page flashing, less often. But I figured the bigger screen would be more flashing (darn). Will the pictures in books in the .azw books being visible? I found pictures are not good in the Kindle 3.

Yes through the experimental, no you don't get charged. But don't use the mobile version as it doesn't work on kindle DXG.

Well i can view my PDFs easily, i read a lot of mangas on my kindle DXG, i can choose a big font and still do less page turns. These are the advantages.

Though there isn't a kindle lighted cover as in kindle 3 so i use my bedside reading lamp. this and the the less portability are the only disadvantages i can think of.

Yes of course you can see the pictures in .azw books but the quality won't be great because as far as i know amazon doesn't let a higher resolution picture for kindle DX so the same picture for kindle 3 will be stretched resulting in loss of quality.

Amazon charges for 3g book delivery via e-mail but if you enable personal documents and disable amazon whispernet 3g delivery you can send your books via 3g from amazon page without a fee.

Okay I just checked and the amazon whispernet 3G delivery is off by default. I have gone into personal documents and sent several books to the DX. So when I get the DX Wednesday and turn on my 3G hopefully they will be transferred. Dumb question, but if you turn off 3G delivery will it still work?

Do you have a protective cover for your DX?

When I tried to modify the Kindle 3 with just screensavers I never got that to work. Not sure if I am brave enough to try modifying the DX. Where are there good instructions for this? Maybe that is why I never got the mods to work on the Kindle 3.

I prefer the large reading space so I prefer the DX to the K3. I use the K3 when traveling because it is easier for me to handle on an airplane.

I have an Oberon cover for my DX. Love it.

reprep, I've seen you recommend the K3 firmware for the DX several times. When I went to that page, though, it said near the top that apps don't work with it. I stopped right there, because I use some of the apps.
Is it correct that the apps don't work?

Where is it? I have looked all over.

I can't see doing the firmware for a new DX. I am not sure it will do much for me other than the Sans Serif font. But somewhere I read I can do that from Calibre.

When I got a firmware upgrade for Kindle 3 I didn't see any changes. It was suppose to put page numbers in and it didn't. The page speed was the same, I didn't notice any changes. So 3.3 firmware didn't do anything for me. Of course the DX is under 3 so I won't know til I try the DX.

Yes it is true that kindle apps don't work. Also text to speech voice crackles. These are mentioned in the first post. There is a way to reenable the active content. Read the posts below for doing it or you can contact me if you need help.

I use the original amazon cover (orange one hard to find nowadays) i would like to have an Oberon cover but they don't deliver them here and i hate using a third company to have it sent to me.

DX's firmware is really under 3 this is why we try to install the hacked firmware. Web browser and pdf viewer is seriously primitive compared to kindle 3. Also i think kindle DXG is working faster on firmware 3.2.1 but that's just me i can't say it for sure.
