Debian 3.1 Released
Hell must be frozen solid today. After the news about Apple switching to Intel, comes the news that Debian 3.1 "Sarge" is the new stable!
Nice "up to date" (for Debian, anyway ![]() Quite an amazing day, today is. |

Heh, so Debian is your favorite Linux distro? I am still running FreeBSD here but haven't spent much time lately to keep it up-to-date.

Currently I'm running Debian unstable on my old desktop (PII), so this release doesn't actually affect me, but it's nice to know. I'm also starting to use Ubuntu on a machine I generally use for testing stuff.
But still, when Debian releases a new stable, it's rather large news. Especially with those rather-new packages. 3.0 was using things like KDE 2.2.2, Gnome 1.4, and Mozilla 1.0. Over three years since the last release! |

The ISO of the official 3.1 release has an unfortunate bug. The installed Debian doesn't contain or download any security updates, since there is an error in "/etc/apt/sources.list". It points to "http://security.debian.org/stable/updates", but instead should point to "http://security.debian.org/testing/updates". To fix this problem, simply make sure that the file points to the correct url. Debian is going to release updated ISO files soon which will carry the version 3.1r0a.
