Rockbox is a complete replacement of the operating system. There are versions for lots of different MP3 players.

as misling said: its an othes OS for the devices your bonus is, you decide on the folders, a lot of devices can be used with more formats , and you can even redesign the interface (what when how and how long has to appear) so it 's great for people who have issues with sansas folder structure or fonts on the display

quite the same reason why I bought the zen stone plus back then.
Don't care about covers, and watching vids or pics on these small devices is pointless; so everything with that fancy postag stamp-size truecolor screens is IMO needlessly shortening playtime by draining the battery.

Since this is a book forum, it might be worth mentioning a couple of points about audiobooks.

Rockbox can't play protected WMA content, which is the format of most public library (OverDrive) audiobooks. But that's not a problem really, because Rockbox allows dual boot. I.e., when you power on normally, it comes up Rockbox; but alternatively, you can boot into the original Sansa firmware (which can play protected WMA content) using a special power-on sequence (I don't know what it is for the Clip+, because I'm the odd one who doesn't like Rockbox).

To be able to resume audiobooks where you left off,
- Rockbox has a setting to do that for all files.
- The original Sansa firmware does that if either
----- the file is tagged "Audiobook" or "Podcast"
----- the file is stored in the "Audiobooks" or "Podcasts" folder (usually easier than retagging).
Since you must use Sansa firmware for public library WMA audiobooks, and you need to load them with the OverDrive app (as opposed to drag-and-drop), and since the OverDrive app by default sends content into \Music, you have to force OverDrive to instead load into folder \Audiobooks. There's a button "Advanced Options..." during OverDrive's Transfer process which allows you to change the location from \Music to \Audiobooks.

Well I've been playing around with my Clip Zip and I have to say it is AWESOME!

I didn't bother with the software, just drag and dropped my music, podcasts and Audible audiobooks in their designated folders. Everything works just fine.

I've been giving hubby the puppy eyes all night since Tuesday is my birthday and he got $100 in movies DVDs the other night. No luck yet but not giving up. I'll give him my Clip+

I was reading it lets you hide unused menu items now and the folder list is now sorted by A-Z. the menu is now in color then two tone. It's really nice and I want one!

I have one of these. It is my first ever mp3 device and I love it. My husband installed Rockbox on it as well. I now can't live without it.

Edit: I'm another person whose needs are pretty basic. I don't need any fancy pictures or anything. I just need to put whatever files I feel like on it and that's it.

For kicks and giggles, I put the .txt version of "Pride and Prejudice" on it, and lo and behold, if I were desperate enough to read it, I could. Six words at a time, but heck, "because I can" had me giggling.
