Antivirus really slows down Calibre
Afteer month of use I have disable my Kaspersky antivirus and the results are astonishing.
Previusly Calibre took minutes to start-up. Now I have it loaded in less than one minute and even less than 30 seconds. The startup time for adding a book is non existant. Previosuly I had to way for Calibre to start for over than one minute. I don't know if other users had the same experience. I whish to share mine with you. |

Over the years I have heard this from many calibre users. It is unfortunate that a/v programs do this.

I run Avast, and Malabyte, and Calibre seems unaffected by them, all very quick & speedy.

I suspect it has to do with if the a/v program does "real time protection", i.e. it intercepts every filesystem operation calibre does, checks it and only allows it if it thinks it is safe.

I guess it´s a combination of Hardware and AV. Specialy if you are running all in one solutions. These packages mostly have not well defined setups for all kind of users/hardware and on the other hand there is the user who is thinking more is better and use all possible options the software is providing. On hardware with low resources I install only the internal firewall of OS and a small only AV solution what works perfect for "normal" users.

This is a Kapersky issue. Not all A-V programs cause issues with Calibre. I'm using MS A-V, and having zero problems. (It does a real time scan, just as Kapersky does, but is apparently smarter about it wrt Calibre, because it doesn't appreciably slow the program down.) I suggest this is something to take up with Kapersky.

I use ESET NOD32 and see no apparent slow down either; it also is doing real-time scans.

What kind of hardware (and Windows version) are the "no slow down" folk running?

I also use Kaspersky and after reading this thread, I added calibre.exe to the excluded and trusted lists. Wow... what used to take forever to load now takes just a few seconds to fully load Calibre (and I mean literally 2-3 seconds now). I still let Kaspersky scan any net activity just in case I manage to get a virus that plants itself in the Calibre directory, and that's not slowing it down at all.
So there's a good and easy workaround for it. |

I also use Kaspersky and have Calibre listed as a trusted program. I am not seeing these slowdowns that the OP is seeing. I always felt that Calibre was pretty responsive for me.
