Using Kindle Touch in Canada

Hello everyone!
I am thinking of ordering a Kindle Touch for my dad and was wondering if there were any other Canadians using the device who could help me out.

I have no idea how these things work, to be honest. He'll likely only be reading books on the thing, nothing complicated as he's not very tech-savvy. Could anyone tell me how you go about buying/downloading books to the device and if the prices are the same if you are in Canada as opposed to the States.

Thank you!

In Toronto, I have a Kindle 3 keyboard - and I love it. I have spent very little over the last year (under $100) on books, yet I have hundreds of good books - due too many offered for free.

The Kindle Touch is not yet released for Canada. It should be soon I suggest. But you could buy one (the WiFi) in the US and it would work OK.

The 3G may not work on 3G here - as I suspect AMAZON is working a deal with the Canadian Telco Cartel.

I am waiting for Kindle Fire, but am not holding my breath, the Amazon ecosystem in Canada is essentially books... not music, not videos, movies or television... I could only imagine the hurdles faced by Amazon in dealing with our crooks in suits - protected by Ottawa - cable and ISPs companies.

I know people with the Kindle Keyboard 3G in Toronto and the 3G works fine.

I am using Kindle touch in Canada. It works exactly as it would work in the US. You will be using amazon.com to buy your ebooks.

Thanks for the info everyone!
Is there that much of a difference between the kindle keyboard and touch (aside from the obvious lack of buttons on the touch)? You get the books from essentially the same place and all that? My dad is in Northern MB, I don't even think there is 3G there haha. But everything should be fine as long as there is access to wi-fi?

The older 3G models work fine in Canada - I know that.

But the new 4th gen 3G model still needs permission from our telco to work. Bell/Rogers/Telus do not allow just any new device on their network for free to end users... that was my point.

I go to Amazon's 3g Touch page and it says:

"Free 3G Wireless
Our most convenient Kindle - no wireless set up, no hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. Download books anywhere with no plans, contracts, or monthly fees. 3G works globally. Learn more"

When I click "learn more" I get the coverage map and it includes most Canadian urban centers.

I've been hunting for people trying this for awhile. What I've read is:

Quote:
you can use it in Canada, it's fully functional in Canada, EXCEPT - unless you have a US billing address, you CANNOT download content. You will only be able to download content from the US Kindle site, and you need a US billing address to download from the US Kindle site.
A few other posts from people who asked amazon (but have not tried) said the same: you must have a US billing address.

Robertpolson, has that been your experience, or are you using a Canadian billing address to buy from amazon.com?

Thanks,

noclue

I have a Toronto address and I have not had many issues.

I am able to buy books from the US site.

I have had some issues with most non-book offers - like games or applications - all were denied 'cause of the Canadian address.

I subscribe to a Pixel of Ink daily email of FREE books on Amazon.com (not .ca) and I am happy to report I am able to get the free books from them. They have a decent selection of free contemporary books and classics.

I also send myself some PDFs - using my Kindle email address. Some of those PDFs are textbooks and I read them in landscape mode - as the font is fixed and bigger that way and tables are easier to read... These now show up in your Personal Doc folder on the Amazon cloud - quite handy.

I can't comment about the Kindle Touch, but I have the new regular Kindle. Apart from lack of buttons, I would imagine overall use is similar. It doesn't get any easier. You purchase the book online on amazon.com, and if your kindle is connected to wifi, it automatically downloads the book onto the Kindle and is ready to read! If you want to sideload your own books and they are in the appropriate format already (e.g. mobi) just have to plug in the USB cable, and drag the file into the 'documents' folder. If they are not in the appropriate format, I just send it to my @kindle.com email address and it converts for me, and automatically downloads onto my kindle.

You cannot purchase eBooks from Penguin at Amazon in Canada. So if you don't mind not having access to Penguin's eBooks, go for a Kindle. If you might mind, don't go for a Kindle.

I just bought a K4 at Sam's Club in Buffalo yesterday. I brought it home, registered it to my .com account and am good to go. I never thought in a million years I'd buy or like a Kindle. I really hate the keyboard and don't like the idea of being tied to only one place to buy from, but I'm liking it.

I'm not trying to start a Kindle vs everything else out there discussion. Please don't anyone go that route. And I don't do the de-DRM thing.

As far as buying, it works perfectly fine. Exactly like it's supposed to. I've bought onlilne through my PC and I've bought from the device. No issues at all.

As a plus I noticed that there's no Canadian taxes added to the prices of the books. It may be worked into it but I like not having that on top of the price I see. I'm still working my way with the device & getting used to it. I do really like the size of it. It's very light too.

Hey, I live in Toronto and picked up my kindle touch from Best Buy in Buffalo, NY. It only cost 99$. Acquiring ebooks is not that big of a deal if you know where to get them and its as simple as putting songs on your MP3 player.
The reading experience is phenomenal.
