Hi everyone,

Just joined the site.

I'm currently reading two books at the moment. 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett and 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman.

I do like 'American Gods' but I don't love it yet. I just can't seem to really get into it, and I usually like stories about wise-cracking Gods, etc. I'll persevere with it, though!

So I am now reading Winner-Take-All Politics by Jacob S. Hacker. I would be started on The Temple of Dawn, the third book in the Sea of Fertility tetralogy by Mishima, but it turned out that while my local library system had one copy of Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, and Decay of the Angel it had no copies of Temple of Dawn. I suspect that it must have had all four at one point but the one was lost or stolen. So while I am waiting for a special request from outside my normal library system I decided to read something completely different, the better to understand the current state of American politics.

After reading Runaway Horses once more (I read the entire tetralogy years ago) I found I liked it even better than Spring Snow.

I'd like to know what you think of Winner-Take-All Politics, when you're done. I was looking at the description two days ago, considering a purchase.

Recently read: The Passage by Justin Cronin

Currently reading: The Big Short : Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis

Currently reading: Foundation and Empire by Isaac Asimov

Hi and welcome Garam!

I finished The Turtle Boy, it was only a short one and have started Ready Player One.

Welcome garam. I never did "get into it." I realize it's loved by millions, but it didn't resonate with me in the slightest.

Highly recommended though not without flaws, one of which is being 100 pages too long. Essential for anyone who likes apocalyptic stories and is sick of vampires with polite manners.

I listened to this as an audiobook, and I think it enhanced the experienced, as it was very well done. What really impressed me was the sheer scope of the undertaking. And I agree that it is a welcome return of revenant vampires - I'm thoroughly sick of the shimmering kind .

Looking forward to the sequel...

A good continuation of the tale of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. I'm liking the series more and more as it goes along. This book essentially contains two complete tales of our heros going out to gain treasure by various means.

Next Up: Dinosaur Summer by Greg Bear

I bought this in the May 60% off sale, in conjunction with a 15% rebate for a large order. Net cost to me: $2.60.* Now I just have to hope I haven't read it before!

*15% buywise member discount. 60% off sale. 15% rebate.
Final cost = 0.85*0.4*0.85 =28.9% of RRP = $8.99 * 0.289 = $2.60.
Now I remember why I bought so much in May!

My new favorite since Jim Butcher and Patricia Briggs won't write any faster.
Illona Andrew's is good enough in the first book to move onto the second and really finds her pace in the third. Loving these!!

You might want to take a look into some of these:

Kim Harrison's The Hollows series
Rachel Vincent's Shifter series
Rob Thurman's Trickster series
Lucy A. Snyder's Spellbent series
T.A Pratt's Marla Mason series
J.A. Pitt's Sarah Beauhall series

There is a thread called The Dresden Files in this forum where some Jim Butcher fans hang out...
