VAT is 19% in the Netherlands, so a VAT-inclusive price of €599 is €503 without VAT. US$599, however, is only €389 at current exchange rates, so even without VAT the machine is 30% more expensive in the EU than the US.
For once, the UK actually seems to be doing rather better. The UK price is £399, including VAT, which is €502. Knocking off the UK VAT rate of 17.5%, we're paying 10% more than the US price, but 20% less than the Dutch price. |

there is a fact so obviousl but seems never be mentioned, iliad screen area is much larger than the sonic 505,that is 64/36, almost double. That means while reading a book in same font you have to change almost double pages in 505.
Time of change one page? Shall we compare two devices in this way? |

Got the Iliad Book Edition
I got my Iliad Book Edition today. I'm a bit ambivalent about it to be honest. It certainly didn't have the wow factor that the Sony Reader had when I first saw it. That'll be a function of having used a Sony for a year [1] I expect. I'm used to eInk displays now. The screen on the PRS-505 is better. Interestingly the Iliad screen has looked best so far under the fluorescent lights when I was in the office this afternoon. I stuck a Sandisk 4GB CF card in it and set it to be the default location for all content.
I've been experimenting with the best way to use it to read A4 PDF's as this is what I bought it for. So far I think the way that'll work best is in continuous mode and zoomed in to get rid of the margins. I think the note taking functionality will be one of the things I use the most. I'll try and get one of the Wacom AT Cross Executive pens when I'm in San Francisco in a few weeks. I'll have to see how it performs over the next few weeks. It'll not be replacing the Sony PRS-505 for reading fiction. Ian [1] First a PRS-500 then a PRS-505 |

For reading A4 papers, it often really pays of to turn the device by 90° (and use that iPDF feature to do that)

I know it's a matter of preference, but i find it easier to use with the flipbar on top. With the fipbar on bottom, you have to hold the iLiad with the tips of your finger, in a very unnatural position.
With it on top, you can hold it by its sides and flip with your thumb(s). |

I also like it with the flipbar on the top...
Most often however you will be panning with the pen nevertheless.. |

People, about the extreme high price in EU, here is what I did : I ordered the iLiad from eBooks.com, I got it for 699$ + 12$ shipping. Four days later, iLiad was at home, and I didn't even have any VAT to pay.
Not sure this is a failsafe solution, but as I live in Switzerland, even if I had to pay the VAT (which I expected to), it was still a lot cheaper as the device bought from irex.com with location set as Switzerland. It happens that my billing address is in France, so there was some confusion and iLiad was sent to my french address. I was a bit afraid when I opened the package because VAT in France is more than twice as high as VAT in Switzerland, but no, no VAT ![]() |

I'm looking at buying either a v2 or a Book Edition in the coming days. It will mainly be for reading academic pdfs (which is why I've decided to go with the iLiad).
The only reason I might go with the v2 is if it's easy to move files onto it wirelessly, rather than fiddling with SD cards and the like. Could anyone tell me if it's straightforward, or whether I'd really be better off without the battery drain of the wifi connection? Cheers. |

Axel, I phoned the customs about that, they told me "it will be done automatically, you don't have anything to do".
So I don't feel to bad about it ![]() |
