Hi friends and neighbors and fellow readers.

I am SeaKing. I own a Kindle I have used Amazon for years.
I am a happy camper

I don't own a nook. I don't use Barnes and Noble.
I have no complaints about nooks or Barnes & Noble even though I chose not to use them. Nooks and Barnes & Noble don't make me sad or mad.

I wish all people were happy campers.
It is sad to see people sad and mad. Sometimes I try to tell them to just stop thinking about things that make them sad and mad. I wish that worked.

So there!

Funny. Actually yes, I did, as you see neither Sil_liS nor I have said anything else to each other on the subject.

Rhadin may or may not be done discussing this with me, but my comment was not addressed to rhadin.

Since I was complaining about people complaining about people complaining about Amazon, I thought the best thing is to stop.

On topic, this is the original source for the news.
Quote:
Competition is more fierce than e-Readers & Tablets – We expect Amazon's smartphone to be a mid end device based on the processor it adopts. While OMAP 4 is mainly used in high end models right now, TI's OMAP 5 (ARM Cortex A15, 2GHz dual core) launch in 3Q12 will likely knock OMAP 4430 (ARM Cortex A9, 1.2 GHz dual core) to the mid end segment in 4Q12. We estimate that: i) OMAP 4430 will be priced at around US$10 by 4Q2012; ii) 4 inch touch panel + display could cost around US$20-22 by 4Q12; iii) A QCOM dual mode baseband (HSPA+ / CDMA EVDO) may cost around US$10-12; iv) 8MP camera will cost US$9-10; and v) 512MB Mobile DDR + 8GB NAND flash should cost below US$15. Overall, we believe the hardware BOM cost should be below US$100. Considering various royalty (3G + OS royalty to MSFT, other software, etc.), assembly fees, warranty, warehouse costs, etc, we estimate Amazon's overall costs should be around US$150-170. What is important to note is that Amazon does not need to make money on hardware. Hence, it can sell this mid-end dual core smartphone to carriers at US$170 in 4Q2012. For a normal brand like HTC, they need to price the product at US$243 to make 30% gross margin. If Amazon is actually willing to lose some money on the device, the price gap could be even bigger. Besides Amazon, Xiaomi Tech is also selling a handset with compatible spec to HTC Sensation at around US$317, which is roughly where the overall cost is.
Based on Amazon's pricing on the other devices, it seems likely that it might cost $199. If there is an ads supported version maybe it would be $170-$180.

I think that an Amazon phone would make a lot of sense. It would complete the array of mobile devices on which it could offer and advertise its goods and services. For all the snark about it having the KF specs, it would not be like that. It would be a mid to level smartphone, priced to sell -probably around 99 with contract. I could see them offering an ad-supported version for 20-50 dollars less, too.

So I don't buy Amazon products. I do not say they are bad products or good products. Just that I don't buy them for these reasons. And that I don't trust Amazon.

Do I think consumers should support Amazon? No. Not any more than I would support allowing 8-year-olds to work in coal mines. I see nothing wrong with criticizing Amazon and the way it does business.

It is of course, fine to imply that my patronage of Amazon equates to a support for child labour in coal mines. Try some consistency.

In Europe we get some phones free with contract. Do you think that they would restrict the sales to the US?

In the US it is the same-carriers can subsidize part or all of the hardware costs and make up the difference in the 2 year contract.

Amazon's potential disruptive advantage would be the same as the Fire approach-instead of carriers subsidizing the cost of the hardware, Amazon could (theoretically). Instead of a free phone with a two year carrier contract, how about a free phone with, say, a two year Amazon Prime contract instead?

It still needs a phone company for the phone related stuff. Maybe they will have an offer of: free phone with the carrier contract + cheaper Amazon Prime contract.

What would be really ground breaking is if Amazon could get into the carrier business!

Now I could get behind that!

I'd be interested to see what their rates and plans would be. Wonder just how competitive they could be with the other major players and, if they DO shake things up, how their entry could make the other players lower their prices (which would be nice).
