calibre handles rar. No plans for any other formats.

I am surprised if it is undocumented. It is very widely used to pass books around as when you add a rar to Calibre it will automatically extract any (single) ebook file and add it in extracted form. That functionality has been there for years.

The ZIP format tends to be used primarily to store HTML books - although Calibre does not mandate that usage as compulsory.

i guess .rar is only 1/2 supported actually i.e. - as "read from" but not as "convert to"... leastways it's not on the drop down choices

RAR is not a format. It is a Archiver (think wrapper)

But surely unless some device or program NEEDS books in RAR format, why would you havea convert to RAR option?

Many devices tolerate Rar or Zip wrapped formats.
EPUB is a Zip with a very exacting set of files and relationships within.
You can un-zip a EPUB (putting it back together correctly is trickier)

by that definition, ZIP is not a format either, yet is on the formats list.

no idea - just nitpicking - though some folks could argue that RAR compression is better than ZIP.

so (trolling) why have a convert to ZIP option - what device needs books in ZIP ?

The ZiP format is really HTML when converting. Calibre can only store one file per format, and since an HTML eBook always has multiple files ZIP is elected as the format to store the HTML related files.

Any multi-part book needs to be wrapped (ie. HTML w/images,CSS,fonts)
RAR is a better encoding. It also takes more crunch power which may be too much for a wimpy device

That's not the only issue. If I remember correctly, RAR is a proprietary format. The license allows for using the extraction portion freely but I think you're not allowed to make a program that creates RAR archives. 7z support sure would be nice since it's a lot more efficient at compressing a bunch of text files. Darned slow, though. It's the one app I regularly use which makes full use of my quad-core i7 CPU.

"RAR is a proprietary format. " - good point - have owned winzip, winrar for so long I forgot about that. same would apply to zipx I guess
