Okay, I'll jump start the thread, since I so rarely win. I read this today, and got a kick out of it:

Thank you! I've missed participating as well as the regulars. I've been snowed under (which would include literally, for a while. Snow before Halloween is just wrong, especially when it takes your power and internet with it.).

That said, I don't think I've got any especial acumen and I'm clueless regarding Tom's intriguing quote.

I can't resist commenting in regard to The Thin Man, that in the films, Nick Charles was the thin man. Not in the book, however. But I love William Powell and Myrna Loy, just the same. Why did they stop making screwball comedies?

Not Oscar Wilde. It's from a short story, and I'll accept either the name of the short story, or the name of the collection in which it is found.

Here's a fuller quote:

Xxxxxxxx had known Quinton in wild student days in Paris, and they had renewed the acquaintance for a week-end; but apart from Xxxxxxxx's more responsible developments of late, he did not get on well with the poet now. If no one has it by tomorrow, I'll fill in the xed-out name and that should at least point someone to the series. It won't point anyone to the book, however, because he's a recurring figure in the books.

That's clearly one of the Father Brown stories by G K Chesterton. I don't know which one though.

I knew the name Flambeau would give away the series. Since there are only five compilations of the short stories, care to take a guess at which one it is?

Since you came closest, I'll turn it over to you. The short story from which the quote came is titled "The Wrong Shape" and it is found in The Innocence of Father Brown by (of course) G.K. Chesterton.
