I just use ES File Explorer on my phone to get the apk needed. You can backup the app using the app manager and it will give you the apk file. I did this for the Coby I had for 8 hours and it worked well. I now back up each app before upgrading so I can downgrade should the new version cause any problems.

I am so hoping that the app will work on the Fire with it's new interface then having the default Android launcher it's really up in the air till someone tries it.

Right now we know Mantano works. It's getting really exciting!

You sent the Coby back right? Did you get a replacement or going with something else. Someone else here had similar issues and went with the Vizio Tablet and is very happy with their purchase. The A1 is having some nice reviews as well.

Katie1 - It's possible some people received it early, as review copies. This happens on tech blogs, but it could also be an Amazon employee who got a test one early? I'd hope not, because that's a conflict of interest, but it could be a tech blogger, too (though I'd imagine they'd put the review on the blog not Amazon).

And, wow, it's gotten hot in here! Fire, indeed. Thanks to all who tried to keep it civil in here.

Reviews are up in the tech blogs, and as pointed out in the Fire Review thread, they just can't resist trying to compare it to the iPad2, which it wasn't even designed to beat. *sigh* It's for a different consumer. Yeesh. And it sounds like it's "unpolished," as far as UI goes, but that's to be expected, since Amazon said from the get-go they were rushing to get this out there for Christmas. It'll be improved upon. It's like Kobo and the Vox, though it sounds like with fewer problems out of the box. This probably where the Nook Tablet will have some edge; its UI has matured in comparison and should be an improvement upon the original with fewer newborn quirks.

I wanted to kill the NYT review this morning, however, when the author seemed to say you could only download library books on Kindles and not the Nook. WTF? The OverDrive app works great on the NC ... Fact check, please!

I saw that! I don't think half these reviewers know what they are talking about.

I think the Vox in the long run will work out it's problems. The ones it has are known Android issues that still exists in newer versions. It seems that google has ignore it for the most part.

I do think Amazon may have already dealt with it by using a hybrid. At least I hope so. no mentions in the reviews about it.
The nook Tablet looks really nice I only wish it had been cheaper but I think I will be happy with the Fire. As you know I'm only getting it for reading and surfing. Hubby wants to play games on it but that's about it.

I never had access to the Market until I got my Thrive so it never crossed my mind to backup apps to port them. So thanks for the tip. I downloaded the newest version of Astro which lets me backup apps and successfully ported MX Video Player and its CODECs to my Coby 7024. Played some of my home brewed AVIs and MP4s without a hitch. So it looks more and more like a Fire may be in my near future. Gotta find some way to stream those videos from "The Cloud".

Yep, the Coby went back. I've got a thing for 8" tablets so I ordered a Archos Arnova 8 G2 which is due here the 17th. That is why I hope Mantano updates the way they handle two pages.

Anyway, I'm glad that Mantano will work out for you. Put you in the cat-bird seat. Kindle app for the mobi and Mantano for the epubs. Since the Kindle app appears to much improved, if I were to have a Fire I could quit disinfecting book files! Then I could settle down and spend my time reading instead of fiddling with tablets and ereader apps.

Oh! the Archos Arnova 8 G2 looks really nice! Congrats! Let me know when you get what you think of it. Mantano needs to add the two page mode and they need to add the free version to the app store. I read in portrait mode so it works fine for me.

I think the Fire is more of a media device then a tablet. I'm sure we will know soon how well 3rd party apps work on it. I'm just excited they are not blocked.

Plus some internet providers frowns on excessive bandwidth consumption. I know mine sure does they have their own Netflix type service so they tend to throttle other stuff like that.

You're welcome

I ruled out the Fire as soon as I found out it only had a paltry 6GB of storage and no card slot. That is so video unfriendly.
