I joined belatedly. Today was my second writing day. 6065 words so far, and I fully intend to hit 50k. This is my first NaNoWriMo.

I already have three fantasy books out (which I wrote slowly compared to NaNoWriMo speed). NaNoWriMo has so far been a good way for me to kickstart a new science fiction novel.

Anyone else participating with science fiction or fantasy?

Me! I am!

Mentions of NaNoWriMo kept appearing in the newspapers and on the radio... Then the message boards were all full of people taking part. They all seemed to be having so much fun. I thought to myself 'I like fun'.

But it's quite hard work. It's like a big international homework competition. I joined, I think, four days ago is it now? I have three day's quotas to fulfill this weekend.

Oh, and it is fantasy, the genre I'm writing in, I mean.

And spectacular zoomy kudos to you for your first two days, LynnaMerrill.

I just checked my (unfinished) outline and realized I'm through the first four pages and have eight more written. I have just over 16000 words typed. That means I'm averaging about 4000 words per page of outline.

I know where I want the novel to go, so I'll take the time to finish the outline and ensure I have enough story lined up for the 50000 words. The most intense parts are coming, so it may end up as more than 4000 words per outline page.

I'm so excited now, I can see a way to the end. That light at the end of the tunnel ISN'T the headlight of a fast approaching train.

Thanks for the kudos. What is your fantasy about?

mrscoach:
Your writing process is interesting to me, it sounds different from mine. You prefer to have an outline before you start on the actual fiction text, is this correct? I usually start with the fiction text, or perhaps with a jotted down idea, then I make a rough outline when I know better where the book is going.

Wow mrscoach. The creative process is a joyous experience, just listening to you, even for me, second hand.

Oh, mirrors, islands, waves and vessels flying through space with mysteries on board...currently. It's still very small.

Let me be clear on this outline. This is the first time for me to use one. I just figured that instead of meandering around like usual I would jot down definite ideas and an ending. Still haven't gotten the ending, but I know approximately what it will be. Since I have a definite time period to finish meandering isn't allowed.

I also tend to put in things that weren't in the outline. Or even in the handwritten pages if I write by hand first. I'm just like that. It always seems to be the 'slipped in' portions that become important later, too. So I don't argue with it too much.

May I make a suggestion? Next year, write your outline in October so you can dedicate the whole month to writing? I tried outlining last November and ended up not writing anything, so this year I did everything in October and got a nice fat notes pack together. That doesn't mean I haven't had to add stuff to it like the floor plan of the witch's cottage, but it helped.

I decided VERY late in October to do NaNoWriMo, so I'm surprised I have any planning done. The outlining I had done came before November 1 and I stopped that to get started with the actual writing, I was so eager.

I just got to 12,901 words, after four days of writing. I am now thinking that perhaps I will not only make my 50k in November, but perhaps I will also reach 100k in December. I have never written a book so fast before.

I just read the post where I cursed you all for pulling me into this. That was on October 23. Wow, seems longer. I realized I had said I was going to outline and redo something I had written about 10 years ago. Nope, had a completely new story come to mind. I didn't feel like fighting with my previous story, and felt it wasn't in the spirit of NaNo.

Now, gotta get off the 'net and get to writing again.

When it happens, it happens. My original story was a werewolf lust story in small-town Texas.

I hit 30k words yesterday after a 2700-word sprint, and also reached the climax of the plot. Its all descending action from here.

Uch! How is everyone else being so successful? No one character will do what I tell them to or go where I tell them to. The events are becoming a law to themselves. Whenever I write a thousand words I find myself thinking: 'No, that's wrong.' Then I cut and start again.

And I can't stop myself going back and editing what is left... my word count is going backwards...

LynnaMerrill, the shiny blue glowy-thing in your picture is the shiny-blue of speed. The shiny blue glowy thing in my picture, alas, is the shiny blue of doom.

Save me, VydorScope.
