I'm intrigued. I enjoyed the documentary called "The Botany of Desire," based a book by the same author. The amazon description of Omnivore's Dilemma talks about the outsized role of corn, which reminds me of a wonderful little factual film, King Corn, on the same topic.

See, this is what I am trying, at my level, to implement in the way my family eats and lives. As we do not have a farm or yet a possibility to grow our own stuff, I am careful about what I buy, trying to get as much as I can from the local farmer's market. I still go to the supermarket (and here I have also been very choosy) but I do not go to discounters. As I know really well how their distribution chain works, I have decided that boycotting them completely is the best way for me to not participate in their business model, which I simply cannot agree with. My problem with them is at least on three level : their employees policy, their suppliers policy, their choice of products.
It is indeed dearer to shop now, but Aldi, Lidl and Co will not see the color of my money anymore.

Plus, they really have bad taste for interior decoration

Doing what you can is important, and clearly you understand that. Being careful about what you buy, even from a supermarket, is important. Buying organic over non-organic, and local over merely organic, is one way. Avoiding processed foods, buying ingredients and making your own is another way. Encouraging local farmers in any way possible. And, finally, if you have a home with a back yard, even a small one, keeping hens for eggs is not out of the question. See BackyardChickens.com for some ideas. Our yard is really pretty small, in terms of usable space. (That mountain behind us is a problem.

) But we manage to keep 6 hens.

The Omnivores Dilemma traces the history and the TOTAL costs of 4 meals. Fast food, large scale supermarket organic, sustainably grown (what he calls beyond organic), and self hunted/gathered. The book is very well written, and will change how you eat and how you think about what you eat.

So I guess nobody is planning to make a nice Baked Spam dinner for Christmas? Honey glazed with cloves? Maybe a loaf of 'Wonderbread' with some Velveeta in the squeeze tube?

I think we'll have the traditional Christmas sushi! And right now, I'm having a traditional cup of East India Company's 'Royal Breakfast' tea in the late afternoon.

Oh yeah: I stayed at my BF's place this weekend, and he had gone to the teashop to get some loose tea especially for me! He even drank a couple of cups himself. I smell a convert in the making

"Traditional" Xmas Eve meal for us: all things fishy

oysters and fresh frutti di mare, langostinos, lox, rye bread and blinis, and salted butter. We put everything on the table and everyoe picks what he/she likes. The dessert is usually an ice cream, either vanilla if self made, or salty caramel if I find one.

Xmas day: I make a huge thanksgiving turkey with an old Delia Smith recipe (I know, I get the dates all mixed up

, but we love that recipe) with a chestnuts and apple filling, cranberry sauce on the side, and rosmarin potatoes. No dessert as we usually cannot eat, speak, walk for the next week after that

The presents are opened on the Xmas Eve, the french way.

Oh, and Xmas time is Johann Sebastian Bach (my personal God) time. I listen to Bach all the time, but at Xmas we all listen together and that is nice .

How is your Xmas going to be ?
