I visited a B&N store yesterday and played with the Nook STR, first time in person. I noticed that the fonts render a little strangely, in that some of the strokes are a little fainter/whiter on the letters. I assume this is something that the new firmware would fix (don't think the display units had been updated)?

I went into B&N today and the Nooks still had the old firmware.
I asked if they had been updated and he said yes. Evidently, he wasn't aware of what was happening. I must say the old 1.0.1 "display" looked very good, though. The background was almost white just a hint of gray. |

Why is it listing Eink as an updated Firmware feature? And all the other hardware things?

It should read: "Fixed rendering of fonts, faster page turns, and various improvements". They know you are going to update anyway, so I guess it wasn't worth their time to format proper release notes. |

I have a Touch Nook and down loaded the nook_1_1_update from B&N and followed their instructions for the manual loading of it and have had no problems with it.
The update did not affect my Rooting at all and the display seemed slightly clearer. Only time will tell if the battery life is better. |

I just updated and when it came back on, it said my SD card was corrupted and needed to be formatted. I'm not going to blame it on the Nook, though, as the SD card was a cheap $10 one from Target, and it was in my phone for a while until all the photos on it got corrupted one day. This is the third time I've had to put all the books back on the SD card since having it in my Nook. So I think I just need to get a new SD card.

Did the update, and initial observations are bolder and clearer fonts (which rendered all the font options usable -- finally!) and slightly quicker turns. I have not had any problems with the Nook, not even with the page freezing though I use the touchscreen function for page turns, so the update was not very exciting.
See photos for pictures of font rendering. Please note that the sun shifted while I was updating as it is noon here, so the brightness is not necessarily attributed to the Nook (I can't tell the difference in contrast). There was an improvement I never thought would appear; the Nook (strangely! finally!) asking if I want to go to last synced page on that ONE sideloaded book which never managed to keep its bookmark. I'm not sure if it was a bug just on my Nook for that ONE book on the previous updates, but it works now and I'm happy. The new update killed my previous line alignment... Then again, it probably is because the font is bolder now, which gives the appearance of a closer line alignment. The next option up separates the lines a tad bit too much, which I do not fancy as well. - p/s: Ok after I typed all the happy things, I was switching books on the Nook to check if the sideloaded book can still keep its bookmark/last read page, and it told me that the Activity Reader is busy and to either wait or force close it. ![]() |

I have previously posted that I installed the update from http://su.barnesandnoble.com/nook/no...1_1_update.zip.
Now I am unsure as to if it did actually install as the software version shown in the About Your NOOK page has not changed. The NOOK has done something with the package I loaded into it, because the ZIP file is no longer there. It is possible that the Rooting I've done with my NOOK may disable the updating, but I personally don't know how to find out exactly what has happened here. WaferCat |

On rooted devices it just deletes the update without updating if its showing a lower version that means it never updated.

Since the update I have had basically no wireless, if I do a hard reboot several times it eventually connects. after spending several hours on live chat, then calling and finally getting connected to someone who knows what they are doing he informed me its a common problem with the 1.1 update and they are working on it. he said they hope to have an update that fixes it by the end of this week. He also said the "factory reset" does not work correctly in the 1.1 update. he said i could switch my router encryption to WEP and it would connect. since I don't really use the wireless I am will to just wait for the update rather than do that..

I was having wireless issues after the 1.10 update as well (with an older linksys router/WPA Personal.) Connecting for me was as simple as turning wireless off and then back on again several times...eventually it would connect.
I was looking to upgrade my router anyway, and after doing so I have had no problems with connectivity. |
