Here it is the 11/11/11. And at 11am rememberance services around the country were held. rememberance day

Bloke was at the RSL singing the National Anthem today. He said it all went well, but the crowd were singing along and trying to go too fast! I said at least the crowd were singing along, they must have been enoying it.

No, it wasn't offered in my schools. And if it was, I probably wouldn't have chosen it at the time. These days I can see how a good grounding in Latin would have simplified learning French, Spanish, Italian, etc., all the 'Romance Languages,' as well as broadening my English vocabulary.

I meant didn't you learn it when the Romans were conquering the world...

But you raise an interesting point. I did learn Latin at school, and I used to enjoy spotting the Latin roots in English and French, and hearing my Latin teacher's hilarious (I think not) jokes:

"Class, translate 'Ceasar advanced strongly' as quick as you can."

"And the answer is 'Cearsar adsum jam forte'". He falls about laughing, much to our bemusement. "Say it out loud, and you'll see how Ceasar spent his afternoon".

You had to be there, I guess...

Learning Latin was the major accomplishment for the Romans. I wasn't about to steal their thunder!

@ Orlok: about my objection, my language includes a ton of Chinese words already. More than healthily enough. Vietnamese sounds 70-80% the same as Chinese!

(really, we just use the modified alphabet, which makes writing much more easier, and that's one of the few differences between the two languages). That sometimes makes me feel like we're not ourselves

So I have no desire to know Chinese, although I know it'd be one of the most important things to learn for XXI century. As for Stitchawl... he might be amused by the way the folks "draw" - not write - the letters, the looks of the words, the delicacy of how it's written... that's easy to understand. Cultural diversity
