@ Stitchawl and Orlok: I want to save some time... finishing the basic French would take me 2 years and by that time I'll be about to graduate. So I want to learn another language, just to get it over with

And it's German, said to be relatively similar to English

I was so pleased at school when I found that German had a neuter pronoun after having spent years getting the gender of French nouns wrong. And then I found that, unlike English where almost all nouns are neuter, in German nouns are either masculine, feminine or neuter. From a 50% change of being right in French, I now had a 33% chance of being right in German!

My French and German are now essentially non-existant now.

Yes I know that (I once learned German for fun, for 2-3 months 5 years ago). It's an obstacle, all those gender stuffs, but I like the precision of German. And the tenses are somewhat similar to those of English, that's the best part.

Well I certainly wish you luck, and am impressed with your ambition.

I never thought of German being similar to English, though, I must say. Maybe it takes a non-English speaker with a different perspective to notice it.

To me, being Dutch, German is closer to Dutch than English. In secondary school we are taught English, French (both from the first year onward) and German (from the second year onward). English you have to follow through to the end and you can choose to continue with French and German after the second or third year.

I dropped German as soon as I could, I was terrible at it. I can understand it okay when we have German customers but don't ask me to speak in German. I did do my French exam but I mostly faked my way through and because I never use it most/all of it's gone. I do listen to a lot of Italian music and understand a little, I would love to learn it properly.

If I were to learn a new language right now, it would be Latin.
But if I were 25, and getting ready to take on the World, I'd study Chinese.
