When an e-reader is loaded with thousands of books, does it gain any weight?

I just added 0.000001x10^-23g to my Sony PRS-650 ereader "Band of Brothers by Steven Ambrose

My wife's Kindle however got its wish and received 101 chocolate cake recipes but refuses to be weighed, though it did ask my wife if the keyboard looked fat in the new lighted cover....

Just make sure you never ask that Kindle how much it weighs. If you do blatantly trouble trouble, and it answers, just make sure you add a trillionth of a trillionth of gram for a closer estimate.

Hmmm... "trapped electrons contain more energy." Where does this come from? An electron has a given mass regardless of whether it's trapped or not, I would think. If energy from the battery is used to "trap" or set a flag, it would be dissipated as heat and lost, leaving the electron in a stable, if trapped, state. A horse weighs the same whether the barn door is open or closed (except for the energy used to walk out the door.) I'm not sure I agree with the article's premise.

It comes down to Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.

By trapping an electron you're decreasing the uncertainty of its position - this leads to an increase in the uncertainty of its momentum (as the product of these two is constant) and hence of its energy. The electrons will have energy distributed through the range of this uncertainty, so as it increases the average energy will increase.

Having said that, the rest of the article is very flawed - it's not the case that electrons in memory not being used for books are any less trapped than those n used memory.

...and that was my point, of course. Whether the flag is set to "0" or "1" for a given location, the energy of the electrons associated would not vary, just the energy used to change the setting, which would be lost as heat. The term "trapped" is perhaps a misnomer.

Understood - I was simply pointing out that, at a quantum mechanical level, the horse actually does have greater energy (and hence mass) when the stable door is closed.

I think it has more to do with an entropic state being less energetic than an ordered state.

Of course they are. The electrons in the first third of my copy of "The Count of Monte Cristo" are a lot more trapped than the ones in the later part of the book.
