I get terrible eyestrain when reading my e-ink device in bed... That's even worse then the eyestrain I get when reading my backlit device during the day.

As far as readability goes, I like LCD better. E-ink is far too gray for my tastes. However, LCD does cause me greater fatigue.
So, for assimilating short bursts of information (like forums/news/articles), its LCD for me, and for prolonged and leisurely reading, its e-ink. |

Both are the same, for me. I used to read on E-Ink, and obviously had no problems. Now I read on an iPad 2, and have no problems with that, either.

If given a choice, I prefer e-ink. But I have been adapting my habits to reading on the iPad: I learned how to decrease the screen's brightness, and increase the ambient lighting in my apartment, and also I have set the Kindle app to sepia to reduce the contrast. Maybe I'll get to where I can read just as long and comfortably on the iPad as on my Opus. For text-only reading though, I always use the Opus. iPad is only for readings that require an Internet connection, or a large screen, or color.

Bear in mind, the "Both are equally easy" option wasn't available earlier. If it had been, I would've voted for that instead of e-ink. Of course, this is MobileRead and as such, the results are already expected to be skewed in favor of e-ink.

I'm okay with reading on LCD for a short time... but if I go in a 3-4 hour reading session, eye strain really kicks in at the end, especially at night.
eInk has been great so far. And I really hope they continue with this technology. Can't wait til the new faster ones come out... then all I'd need is better contrast and some colour, and I'm all set. |

I'm fine reading for long periods on either, but eInk still wins for the flexibility of reading in sunlight. It's easier to switch a light on indoors, than getting an lcd readable outdoors.
Then again, have both, best of both worlds :P |

Hmm, I'm in the both camp. I like eInk, it does seem easier on the eyes, but I've found a good LCD screen with brightness and color adjustments counters the backlight strain (and I like the seamless page turns!). However, I do tend to stay up longer reading with the backlight than the eInk. I may need to train myself to put the Flyer down and go to bed at a certain time. I did that last night, and I did fall asleep fairly quickly (for me) even though I didn't feel that eye pull while reading.
I think the quality of the eInk screen makes a difference, as with the LCD, and so does the lighting. I don't really like eInk at home under our house lighting, because the homeowner hates having lights on - even if I'm reading - and substitutes them for tiny lamps. I'm going to start calling him a vampire (with sparkles, that'll teach him) because calling him Scrooge had no effect. |
