Is it worth it to wait for the Kindle Touch?
So I was all for waiting for the Kindle Touch to come out to get one, but with today's Nook Simple Touch adding better features and dropping to $99, is there even a reason to wait for the Kindle Touch?
A quick comparison: Nook Simple Touch -6 in screen -support epub -no ads anywhere -Expandable microSD up to 32 GB -can be rooted to run simple Android apps, including PDF-specific apps like Repligo, etc. video here vs. Kindle Touch -6 in screen -supports only mobi -a few non-intrusive ads -only 3 GB storage The only things I see the Kindle Touch having over the Nook Touch are: -partnership with Overdrive to download books from public libraries, but that's extremely limited since publishers set the limit *edit just realized you can install the Overdrive app for Android to directly download ebooks to Nook. -Send to Kindle support using Wifi email or Instapaper, which AFAIK Nook doesn't have -an audio jack (but how much music can you fit on 4 GB anyways). I tried a Nook in store and the only I didn't like was how slightly difficult it was to detect your hand gestures when highlighting something, that's one area if the Kindle Touch is better in I may consider it. So are there any other features of the Kindle that make it a potentially better purchase? Thanks. Last edited by bosun120; 11-09-2011 at 01:18 AM. |

It all depends on what you want out of a reader. Where you buy your books and your reading habits. To me the Ads are worth it. I don't think of them as Ads. I think of them as coupons and offers I can use. If you shop at Amazon alot it's well worth it! ![]() I can say Kindle support is top notch. ![]() |

IE. http://sdpl.lib.overdrive.com I can definitely see the Kindle/Amazon having a stronger backend/store support, but specs-wise the Nook seems like the stronger deal, although I suppose I can use the Kindle Android app on the Nook. I'm torn between going hacker route (Nook/Android) or the Apple (less choice but more stable) route (Kindle). |

Kindle Touch has an audio player - audiobooks, text-to-speech, music.
I plan on getting a Kindle Touch and a Nook Tablet.

One thing to consider with the kindle touch is the lack of physical buttons. As much as I enjoy using the touch screen on my iPad, I prefer not having to move my fingers/thumb when reading, the buttons on the side allow for that.
Lack of an audio player is going to be a personal preference. I had one on the hanlin, never used it, don't have one on the kindle 4 and doubt I'll miss it either. I use my mp3 player or iphone for music/audio books. Others prefer having it all in one. I've not used the nook, so can't weigh in on kindle vs nook beyond saying that had the kindle touch had physical buttons in addition to the touch screen, I'd have waited and bought one. I really like the ease of getting books onto the kindle via amazon purchases or free email to my kindle from other sites. |

In the end, it really comes down to the ecosystem you want to buy into. B&N or Amazon? Me, I'll take Amazon. And I like the Kindle design better...tried a Nook Simple Touch at Best Buy and didn't really like the heft or the hard-to-press page turn buttons.
Plus I am already well into the Amazon ecosystem ![]() I know epub support is a huge deal for some people but I just don't get it. I'm perfectly happy with mobi format. I've never been in the middle of reading a book and thought "damn, i wish you were epub so I could buy you for the same price from store A instead of store B!!" I'm perfectly happy to get my books from Amazon (thanks to Apple and Agency pricing there isn't really comparison shoppping anyway) and Baen. I will be interested in the comparisons between the new Nook firmware update and the Kindle Touch. Amazon also advertises that they use a custom font and formatting to make text look crisper so who knows. |

Nook Touch has better hardware.
1) The Nook has page turn buttons! I can't believe Amazon removed the buttons. AFAIC That's a showstopper. 2) Android OS. You can have a lot of fun with this. Kindle has the better purchasing environment. Which is most important to you? |

If it came down to those two, I'd probably just get the Nook Simple Touch. But, I think it's ultimately up to you and which store you prefer to shop at.

I don't think two weeks is much of a wait.
That said, I've had both a nook and a few Kindles, and I really prefer the Kindles. |

It's great that prices are so down now. You could get the Kindle NT ($79) and Nook Touch ($99) and not break the bank.

I assume you're talking about traveling with the Kindle NT. What, IYO, makes it a better travel reader than the Kindle Touch or Nook Simple Touch?
