Hint: This was the only part of the Olympics where I stood a chance to participate. I actually coached two of the events!

That's two... pistol shooting to be precise. And I helped coach the fencing team one year!

Wow, I actually know this.

fencing
target shooting
swimming (distance eludes me but it's not overly long)
cross-country runnning (again, not a marathon, maybe 5K?)
and the kicker...show jumping

It was modeled on what would make a good calvary soldier. The name of who decided on these events is beyond me today, but the original ancient pentathlon was modeled on what it would make a good soldier in ancient times. Frankly discuss and javelin are just pretty gruesome weapons, but that should make everyone enjoy the field events a little more.

The equestrian event was the other that I helped coach, but in a different year. In both cases, the athletes that I worked with were living in my area.

HIMS 'almost' scores 100%... Lets call it 98%. The events are all correct. But the modern pentathlon was base on the skills needed for a good 'courier' (messenger) during the war.
To be more accurate;
Fencing, but only epee
Target Shooting, but only pistol
Swimming is a 200m freestyle
Running, a 3K event
Equestrian is a 12-15 jump course with non-familiar horses.

But 98% is good enough to become the new Inquisitor! Give it to us, HIMS!

Woohoo!

I remember watching the pentathlon during the last Summer Olympics and I had forgotten about the non-familiar aspect to the equestrian portion.

The next question. Hmmmm...thinking of a category. It's got to be food and drink:

In the early 1980s what two things did the United States Agriculture Department propose to classify as vegetables in order to save money on school lunch programs?

^No chips and French (freedom) Fries are not them.

Stitchawl has one of them, although in the United States, ketchup is probably the more correct term.
