Thats it; I give up.

I was one of the people that got network errors every time they tried to update via wifi. After doing a factory reset, moving all my side-loaded books to an SD card so I wouldnt lose them again, and going through the week-long process of re-authorizing my Kobo with Adobe Digital Editions...

... I AM GETTING NETWORK ERRORS AGAIN!

Sorry Kobo. I love your product but it is too much work for me just to keep it working the way it's supposed to. I officially give up, I'm selling my Kobo and getting a Nook Touch.

Doesn't matter. They'll fix this and then in a week or two there will be a new glitch. I stuck by Kobo for months, defending it to people who laughed at me and said "you should have bought a Kindle" every time I complained about a bug on my Kobo Wifi or Kobo Touch. I love my Kobo Touch and I'll be sad to see it go, but all these network errors are ridiculous. I want an ereader that is just going to work; not give me network errors, not give me page-turning errors, not turn on by itself in the middle of the night, not display one paragraph per page and the rest is empty space, not fail to save my bookmark, not have the battery die when it's showing half full, and not give me "free previews" that consist of the table of contents and nothing else.

While the grass always appears greener on the other side, I have to wonder which issues Nook Colour users are pulling their hair out about on the Nook forums...

Is that for a refurbished model?

B&N is selling them "certified pre-owned" from their website for $99.

I missed that one. Yeah, it's refurbished. I typed "nook touch" into Google and hit the shopping tab, that's the cheapest one that came up.

Well, today marks one week that I've been using my Nook exclusively. I much prefer the design and feel of the Nook as opposed to the Kobo, and the text looks more like a real book (ie, indented paragraphs, text fills the entire page, etc). The presence of four physical page-turn buttons on the sides is also a plus, though not something I missed on the Kobo Touch.

One thing I don't like is that the screen does not display the cover of the book I'm reading in sleep mode, it only displays the scratchboard illustrations of dead authors we've all seen hanging up in Barnes & Noble stores. They're awesome illustrations, but after a while they get old, and I'd prefer it to display my book cover.

Side-loading Kobo books is super-easy, you just download the Adobe DRM epub off kobobooks.com and then drag and drop onto the Nook in Digital Editions. HOWEVER... the cover image does not transfer. So all Kobo books just have a plain white graphic of a cover-less book in the menus on the Nook.

One major problem I've noticed is the "error dialog - cannot open book" message. This happens when trying to open certain books. I have a bunch of side-loaded books on an SD card, and half of them would not open at all on the Nook. I had to go into Calibre and delete all the books off the SD card, then move them back again in order for them to work. However, I wanted to buy the new Penn Jillette book, so I downloaded a sample, and the sample will not open. I deleted and re-downloaded twice, but it still will not open. I'm afraid to actually buy the book because I don't think I'll be able to read it.

Also, although the Nook advertises 2 GB of space internally, only 250 MB of that is accessible for side-loaded books, and only 750 MB of that is usable for Nook books. Not a huge problem for me as I don't have anywhere near enough books to fill that up, and I have a 4 GB micro SD card besides, but those of you with large collections might want that information in case you were thinking of switching.

So in fact the Nook is not a perfect e-reader, any more than the Kobo was. I'd say it's better suited to my needs, as a major problem with the Kobo for me was how un-book-like the text formatting was, and the Nook is far more like an actual paper book. However, I have traded frequent network errors and poor formatting for books that are unable to be opened, and that seems to be a much larger problem.

It's not surprising. I'm sure every device ever made by man has some issue or another.

Selling my Kobo Touch, by the way, if anyone is looking to upgrade from a Kobo Wi-Fi.

A friend of mine has the Nook Touch and she's liking it alot. I have to admit that I like some of the features it has to offer, but I like having the ability to download the books directly from the Kobo bookstore to my device using WiFi, rather than side loading and losing the cover art.

Also - it's a bit of a gamble to have a US made device, when you are Canadian. My friend isn't so fussed about it, since she travels across the line frequently, but for me, there has to be a substantial savings or functional reason for buying any electronic with a warranty in the US. I saved about $300 on laptop that I purchased in Orgeon (no tax!), and even that has had me biting my nails for a while. I was lucky to not have any issues in the first year, but sometimes we're not so lucky...

Is there a reason not to just buy from the Nook store instead? Other than the discount codes, but I find that there are so few Kobo books I want that actually allow discount codes that it's not even worth worrying about them.

Are you speaking about me? I don't have a Nook Color and doubt I would ever get one... I already have so many iPhone apps that I would go with an iPad if I were to get a tablet, plus I'm already used to the OS and the way the device works.

Owning a Kobo was a headache from beginning to end. It was great being able to carry loads of books in my pocket, and being able to check out books from the library at home, but it was so frustrating on a daily basis just trying to get it to work the way I wanted it to, that I'm very happy to have moved on to Nook. My Nook is great; there have been occasional hiccups but nothing major that has required factory resets.

Giving up on Kobo was not just a spur-of-the-moment decision, it was a culmination of months of frustration. There was a point where I got a network error after spending a week fixing the network errors, and it was the straw that broke the camel's back, so the speak. I don't have those kinds of frustrations with my Nook.
