New Nook Tablet Official News

(Strangely I don't see a thread for this, only the leaked one so starting one!)

LA Times and ZDNet have coverage.

Quote:
The Nook Tablet is now available for preorder and will be shipped to Barnes & Noble stores and other retailers (Target, Staples, Wal-Mart, Office Max and others) late next week at a price of $249

* 7" LCD
* 1024x768 169ppi
* Dual Core 1 gz
* 1 gig RAM
* 16Gig + MicroSD.
* Cloud Storage
* 11.5hr reading/9hr video
* WiFi
* $249

(For some reason the Liveblog thread didn't show till I posted this -- feel free to nuke the thread!)

I'd say that's $50 well-spent. The review on zdnet seems to not like the nook price point too much, but I suspect some deeper (pocket) motive.

I agree...the extra RAM and storage, plus the 32GB card, would make it worth the extra $50.

Unknowns are the look and feel, the interface, and the "cloud storage" implementation.

If the Fire is noticeably better on those issues, the balance would shift again.

The micro SDHC card slot makes all the difference, no contest. I will have a new Nook soon.

I am not planning to buy any of those, but I would wait and check performance.

What the SD card does is giving you extra space for additional content, but how much extra space a user will need and for what?

This is clearly marketed as a tablet, not a reading device. So for a tablet, I would expect solid and fast performance for video, browsing and screen response, with SD card slot like a nice bonus.

Having two iPad2, with no card slot at all and not using those as gaming devices, can certainly say I do not need an SD card slot, makes no difference. I thought I was going to miss it, but with so much cloud alternatives and most apps. managing info online, I don't see any reason for that.

Movies and music is probably what consume most space and would require an SD card, but on my personal case, I never download a movie to watch it later on my iPad2. I watch it via Netflix. And for music, I don't like tablets as mp3 player, too big, at least for me.

People would need tons or ebooks and several movies to use all Kindle fire space. Which again, with whispersync and Amazon's cloud service, I see no reason to be worried about it.

Sorry, maybe is just me, but I don't understand how people need more and more local storage for 5k+ books. We will need two or more life to read all that content; why carry on so many books an content on a single device? I just don't get it. Even when traveling, less than 1k books would be more than enough for the avid reader.

I sideload videos and large storage is a must - either onboard or via microSD card.

Right, but how frequent or common is that among users?

Also, analyzing the device as reading device, how important an SD card really is?

I'm not trying to dismiss the fact that a SD card or extra space is nice, just trying to see if that would be or not the #1 factor when considering a new tablet.

On my personal case, these would be those factors, in order:

-Device's weight
-Performance (including screen response and quality)
-Available apps or content (without side-loading, without rooting), like Kindle app, Nook app. etc.
-Battery life
-Price

Just 5, to keep it simple.

Reasonable storage is a must. and 6GB to me, is not reasonable for a multimedia device. Apps take up more space than you might imagine, some of them. Throw in some movies.

In the case of the NC, having a SD slot for extra storage is … well …, ok, but in the case of my SGT, I've used a total of 2 GB of the 16 GB I have; so that's kind of moot.

BUT being bootable from the SD card is a huge advantage. It makes it possible to use any number of custom ROMs, including HoneyComb without ever losing the original firmware. There are even folks at XDA-Developers selling SD cards with custom ROMs pre-installed making changing ROMs a simple matter of plugging in a different card.

Good list-I think mine would be
-Performance (not speed or specs, more transparency of use-no laggy scrolling, clean interface)
-Available apps
-Battery life
-Screen size and quality (I find 9.7" the minimum, in fact, I wouldn't mind a 4:3 10.1" for magazines/PDFs)
-Weight (wish the iPad were lighter)

That's why I wanted to go ... ...

Why rooting a device and not using it out of the box?

As a matter of fact, people rooting not Amazon devices and what's one of the 1st thing they do? Installing Kindle app. Would not be easier to buy a Kindle device since the very beginning?

People should actually spend a bit more and getting a device that does not need to be rooted. If a device needs to be rooted, means that is not good enough for that user, out of the box.

I know of lot of B&N users who just got tired of keep rooting and "being slaves" of new XDA ROM in order to fix the device after an official B&N firmware upgrade over the network. Sorry, I don't want that.

I agree it's low for movies and high-caliber games.

Still, I'm pretty happy that my 8 GB is able to hold 3 entire Mozart symphonies, many Beethoven sonatas, quite many rock and electronica, pretty much all Shakespeare, most XIX century romances, a host of Marvel comics, my pictures and movies etc. I can still go 32 GB when I'm fed up with having to actually select what I want with me all the time instead of just dumping everything in...

I solved that problem by wiping out all traces of B&N on my rooted Nook Color. Now I just track CM7 upgrades.

An SDHC card slot is a must for me, not an optional item. Any device missing this feature is not on my list for consideration.

I keep all of my media on these cards: movies, ebooks, music, pictures, etc. I simply swap them around as needed, and I can easily move content from one device to another. It just couldn’t be any easier really. Using “the cloud” for content that should be kept local just doesn’t make sense to me.

I definitely have the new Nook on my list.
