I just finished Toonopolis: Gemini by Jeremy Rodden. Fun cartoon adventure - I have it reviewed on my site.

Now I'm starting The Emperor's Edge by Lindsay Buroker - also for review on my site. Enjoying it so far - she has a way of getting my interest quickly.

This book is typical 'Dave Robecheaux.' Clete Percell is in there, as are several other regulars. Lot's of sno'balls, boudin (white and heated in the microwave,) drive-through daiquiri windows, and of course lots poor folk living in shacks. But the plot is solid and deep, the story line captivating, the action realistic and bloody, and this book certainly makes you anxious to see the next in the series.

The book can stand on it's own, but like so many series, would benefit from reading from the first book to follow Robicheaux's life as a law enforcement officer in the southern Louisiana parishes. I usually put a Clifton Chenier CD on in the background just to set the mood.

I've got the first couple of Robecheaux books, and have been meaning to read them for ages. Your post has encouraged me to make that sooner rather than later, once I have finished to current round of MR "book club" reads.

They are brilliant glimpses into the southern Louisiana life style, both upper and lower crust. Burke's skill with descriptive phrases is almost frightening! Dave Robicheaux is a very troubled man, with serious history coloring his thinking, but a very good person. The stories are well thought out, well laid out, and usually throw the reader for a loop or two. I think you'll enjoy them if you like the police mystery genre.

I do, and having once lived in Louisianna I also have an affinity for the locale (and Cajun music).

Was one of the series made into a film with Tommy Lee Jones, who certainly came across as a bit disturbed? The name escapes me at the moment - I remember a surreal bit where he stumbled into a Confederate camp in some kind of time slip scene.

Yes, and he 'almost' played a convincing Robicheaux. Close, but not quite Cajun enough. The book it was from was "In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead," a very typical (and good!) Dave Robicheaux novel.

Electrons don't weigh to much or take up too much space.

I'm not a huge fan of mysteries/suspense but am interesting in expanding my reading a bit as well. Thanks for the glowing review.

Just finished The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature by Steven Pinker, in which the author puts forward some excellent arguments for why it's a mistake and counter-productive to cling to ideas long discarded by science in an attempt to create a more just world.

Quote:
As soon as we recognize that there is nothing morally commendable about the products of evolution, we can describe human psychology honestly, without the fear that identifying a “natural” trait is the same as condoning it.

Also finished A Canticle For Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller, Jr., the MobileRead Book Club's November selection, and I'm ready for the discussion that begins on the 20th.

I'm currently on a Terry Pratchett binge due to the fact that I'm participating in a Discworld reading challenge. I've read 7 Discworld novels so far and I'm busy with Lords and Ladies at the moment.

Not as good as January's issue, although I did particularly like the novelet "Inner Huff" and the story "Dutch".

Next up: A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.

This isn't available as an authorised ebook in the UK, so I've had to buy a second-hand paperback!
