Motorola Mobility won a formal injunction against Apple in Germany over two patents

Now it seems that Apple has just come out on the losing end of a patent infringement lawsuit -- at least on a preliminary basis even though the actual decision on the merits has yet to be made. I have received a copy of what appears to be a default judgment by the Mannheim Regional Court barring Apple from selling in Germany -- the single largest market in Europe -- any mobile devices infringing on two Motorola Mobility patents and determining that Apple owes Motorola Mobility damages for past infringement since April 19, 2003.

The bit about retroactively owing for damages since 2003 is kinda scary. I wonder how much that would ultimately amount to.

Considering the two patents are about phones, and Apple's iPhone didn't come out until 2007, I find that more bizarre than scary.

Don't we just love it when patent offices go off the deep end and start allowing bad faith patents and patents that're stupidly broad? This whole tablet patent war shouldn't even be happening.

In any event, apparently this is not really what it seems. According to The Verge, Motorola sued both Apple, Inc. and Apple Germany, and this default judgment was against Apple, Inc.

That would also explain the default judgment - I don't know anything about the actual merits of the case, but it did seem extremely strange that Apple wasn't defending it at all.

All large companies play the patent infringement game; it's a part of doing business. Apple are not more (or less) "guilty" of it than any other large corporation.

yes but its so much more fun to blame all of societies ills on apple.... remember in the 90's microsoft was the big evil, in the 80's IBM was the big evil,

But blaming everything on apple, steve jobs and or apple consumers is what all the cool kids do these days

And am I the only one who thought This Is My Next was a far cooler name than The Verge?

Google is already getting it a bit.....Amazon too....

are you talking about "Next" computers? If so I think that was the most brilliant name/marketing strategy he created.
