Thanks M/Nate
Love the openness of the iLiad, but I understand.
I'll keep an eye on the 5". Only four more days!

Edit: Wow! The 6" is smooth. Reminds me of a white Cybook.

And, how good will the annotation feature be compared to the iLiad?

Great to see a company that listens to the community!

I'm not sure how much a CE license costs, but for Windows Mobile I believe it is around $5/unit. Considering that for that cost OEMs get a lot of support from Microsoft with integration, driver development, testing, certification, etc, using Linux is not necessarily a cost saver.

I've saw those photos of devices and looks like the 6" and the 9" devices are similary to Nextronix devices... more close the 6" device...
But the important question actually for me is still "what's the rifraction percentage of the Mentor? just to understand if it is clearly readable also under the sun for example at the beach in summer...." ;-)
And plus since I am new with ebooks while most of you have already a 6" device, isn't so small font to read from your experience?...

Astak and Nextronix are building them as a joint effort, so they look the same for that reason. Hence the reply I got from Astak telling me that because I'm in Australia I should probably deal with Nextronix.

Luigino,

I don't believe anyone's made a "refraction" study of these screens (cloudy daylight, sunny daylight, beach-and-snow sunny daylight, etc) but everyone can tell you that these e-ink screens, under such strong lighting conditions, are so vastly superior to what you experience viewing a typical laptop or pda as to make the latter appear quite useless. Once you've used an e-ink ebook reader in bright light, you'll never go back to LCD devices.

I agree with you, Derek, then maybe my question was silly but I asked because as in a previous post I noticed about the Epson's B6 ebook prototype...

Then now trashing the question about refraction, I'm still with the question about readability of screen between 6" and a 9" when surely fonts are so small in those dimensions from a normal laptop while reading something...

Another nice thing about these devices is that you can adjust the font size to something comfortable for you. Generally when you read an eBook it will be many more "e"pages than that paper book is due to this issue.

I have been reading the 18point font on the 5inch Jetbook and it is perfectly readable to me. It allows for 2 sizes smaller and 3 sizes bigger than that too.

Right, but sometimes couldn't be a bit annoying to move the page when zoomed in a 6" ebook because that should mean a refresh of the page to move to the lower part of the page... plus the PDFs not always can be zoomed...

In fact Epson's prototype should, and I say SHOULD, solve this little detail I guess with his high resolution and his B6's format....

There is no moving to the lower part of the page if you are reading pretty much any format but PDF. When changing font size the books is relaid out. So, it might be 350 pages at 18point but 420 pages at 20point. You only need to go to the next page.

Uhm at this point that would mean if I have PDFs to read, I'll have before to convert them into ebook's format so it will be more readable without problems...but not always it is possible...unfortunately

Luigi,

The Cybook allows for fonts between 6pt and 36pt. Really! At the smallest font, even wearing prescription reading glasses won't help all that much. And at 36pt, the characters are 1/2-inch tall. As for the Netronix EB-100, the same as the Astak Mentor in the 6" display, you get to choose between approximately 12pt to 24pt - from what I can eyeball. Again, a fairly decent range of font sizes. I'm not sure how to change font styles on the Netronix, but on the Cybook, it's just a matter of downloading a TrueType font family to the Fonts directory on the device. I've taken off some of the TT fonts that came with it which I didn't like and replaced them with TT fonts that I prefer.

Ummm... There's always BookDesigner. Seriously, with Adobe Acrobat Professional, one "exports" to HTML, Word .doc, or RTF and then imports into BookDesigner to convert to Mobi. Not that big a problem. I do it once or twice a week.

eReader format?

From RobertB's earlier comments, I was expecting that Astak would be including eReader software, but I do not see anything about it on the web site. Did I miss something?

Maybe it could be installable from us... even at least as I see on the site, RobertB followed our suggest about keeping rechargeable battery at least on 6" device...

Unless they've sunk lots of time and programming energy into this, they're offering the same Eread (file extension .stk) software that already comes on the Netronix EB-100 (and the STAReBOOK STK-101 as well as the ExPlay). And don't believe the listing. The Eread software only "supports" these other formats by requiring you to first convert to plain text (No, not rtf or html - plain text!) which you then drag-and-drop or browse and "open" into the STK-Maker app. Or so it appears on my EB-100. As my EB-100 is a new purchase and that's what it's "supported" formats were listed as, I'd be cautious about presuming the reader software is any more "feature-laden".
