Agreed (even the graphic with all the cover images is not clickable!) but maybe it's coming.

I think it's also a great selling feature for people who are trying to decide which reader to buy. If I had a reader already it might not lure me away but if I was in the market, then its pretty attractive. Add in the 13,000 free streaming video titles and the two-day shipping on tons of items and it casts a broad net.

Heck, I became a Prime member back when unlimited two-day, and $4 overnight shipping was the only real lure and found it a good deal then. All the goodies they've added are just gravy to me, but they're also a good incentive to keep me a frequent customer. I'm at their site a lot more often now. More visits to the site mean more purchases in the long run.

Oh. And a question: Anyone know if this is one book per account or one per Kindle? Maybe that's too much to hope for but there are four Kindles on my account, though only two are in use. We have two first gen Kindles we've never bothered to deregister as well as my Kindle Keyboard and my husband's DX.

ETA: So I looked through the help page and it doesn't say anything about it specifically but it seems to me it's one per account, though we could both read the book on our Kindles at the same time.

Very good question indeed.

I can be wrong, but maybe they are trying to "push" people and force them to get the device, let them be curious about it and invest?

As a DBA and technical person, I would say is better if we can also browse that on Amazon's website, but maybe Amazon engineers do not think same way. Or maybe (and I believe that could be the case) the web interfaces are different and additional sync and setup between portals is needed. They just want to rush the news before fully implemented (guessing here)

Silly question...

How can I borrow or check that on a Kindle keyboard ...

I can't find that option and I updated to most recent firmware few days ago.

I got it by going to "Shop in Kindle Store" and then selecting "See All..." under "Browse" on the stores main page...

Yes, go to Kindle store and select Browse All. The last choice under menu should say Lending.

Is the one book per month limit a limit per Prime account? Per Kindle? What about family members who share the Prime account (I think there can be up to five) who have their own Kindles?

Grrr... My wife has a Prime membership that she shares. I can understand not sharing movies, since it's simple to register our PCs and Blu-Ray player to her account. But I'm not going to buy another Prime membership just for this.

On the FAQ page it says:

Eligible Prime members -- paid Amazon Prime, paid Amazon student, one-month free trial, and customers receiving a free month of Prime benefits with a Kindle Fire -- must own a Kindle device that is registered to the same Amazon.com account as the eligible Prime account in order to access this benefit.

It would seem better to simply allow prime members a free book each month with the possibility of more books per month if the members pay a little extra. I suppose that will come soon enough though.
They already do free books; hundreds a week.
Most other ebook vendors do at least a couple dozen a week, so free eboks is no big deal.

What they are doing here is a two-fer: promote Prime *and* gauge the viability of a netflix-style flat fee lending library. It is no certainty that, even if publishers buy in, an open reading buffet lending model will yield *new* money rather than merely cannibalize outright sales.

It is an experiment.
