I enjoy the Phryne Fisher series as well- light hearted and good hearted. They always cheer me up. The McCall Smith's Ladies Detective series is so clever and heart warming as well.

Did anyone mention Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series? Good read and they are all based in national parks with good descriptions of the locale.

Cool niki heat

not a 'consulting' detective, but i've read the first two 'niki heat' novels and just started the third, 'heat rises'. i liked the 2nd one better than the first and so far this one feels like the 2nd one more than it feels like the 1st one. these books are marketed as being written by richard castle, the main male character in the castle tv show. i've been unable to find who the ghost writer might be. my guess is 'steven cannell' for the first one and 'dennis lehane' for the 2nd and 3rd. that's a completely wild guess

I've really enjoyed the Sister Fidelma series by Peter Tremayne, mentioned in an earlier post.

Hello.

I strongly second, no third, is it? ... the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton. Like the Sherlock Holmes mysteries you get this overwhelming sense of place from them.

The Fran Varaday books make up a little known series by Ann Granger from the UK. The books are short but pretty good.

Sharp, Zoe, the Charlie Fox novels e ****
In inverse order
FOX FIVE (e-thology)
9) Fifth Victim [5th US] TBR
8) Fourth Day [4th US] TBR
7) Third Strike [3rd US]
6) Second Shot [2nd US]
5) Road Kill
4) First Drop [1st set in US]
3) Hard Knocks
2) Riot Act
1) Killer Instinct
Sharp's Charlie Fox is a noir-ish heroine for the 21st century. Kicked out of the WRAC during advanced training for having an affair with an instructor, raped, humiliated and living on her own, just making ends meet, we meet Charlie in "Killer Instinct" at her lowest poing, teaching self-defense to other women for enough to scrape by. Charlie's a survivor. People who screw her or the people she cares about, not so much.

I was glad to see the remainder of the British editions come out in the US. Only "Killer Instinct" was out in the US. All the earlier books are now available as ebooks as well. 1-5 & "FOX FIVE" are very good quality, published by http://www.murderati.com/ which seems to be a coop thing, $2.99 editions. No. 6's ebook version is obviously done by her US publisher, MacMillan, to thier usual poor standards and for $6.99. There is no mystery to why major publisers are poorly thought-of in the ebook world.

Not sure if they qualify but the "Cranefly Orchid" cosy mysteries have a 90+ yr old heroine Victoria Trumble who manages to solve plenty of murders.

I am in the middle of the first kate shugak book - and it's not grabbing me.

The story is set in an Indian reservation in Alaska. There is a LOT of atmosphere/social commentary about the alaskan pipeline, alcohol abuse, the evil mining/oil company, etc.

The personal interactions are also ... poorly described. I am sure the author had a rich back-story about the characters, but someone may have edited it out leaving drama/perception/relationships that seem to exist, but not explained.

From a 'detective' point of view - the crime is simply a plot device to get the characters to interact.

The worst part - I dont really like any of the characters. I really dont care what happens to them. They all seem to be self-absorbed jerks. 'Characters' like a pregnant girl cadging drinks, A radio operator held in contempt because he keeps his office warm, good guys who seem amused/indifferent that two people have gone missing.

Do the later books get better?
