Mhm... I'm not thankful. They state that the cybook is able to display pdfs but in my experience it depends a whole lot on your luck whether you'll get to the end of a book without a reboot. Considering the fact that they had 6 months time to fix a few bugs it's a poor outcome.

@BOOKEEN:
Concentrate on bugs, not on features.

@all:
After the firmware update, when navigating through my library, the cybook sometime crashes. Is this only happening to me?

I'd used it twice since updating with no problem but when I went to use it for the third time it wouldn't work and it hadn't been connected to the computer or had its SD card touched in between uses.

I'm off to search the forum for a possible solution.
I've found these exact symptoms described by at least three other users prior to this update and their solution was to get new firmware from Bookeen and re-flash the device. I've got the new firmware and this method of fixing it no longer works so now I wait for Bookeen to reply to my email.

Did you delete the firmware update file from the SD card? Alternatively, you could try booting without the SD card in place.

Yes, I deleted the firmware update. I've also tried it with and without the SD card. I've also tried disconnecting the battery for a short time and giving it a full charge before turning it on but so far nothing makes any difference.

Does anyone know if the Cybook can be flashed with an older version of firmware or will it refuse to "downgrade" itself?

I am not defending Bookeen in general. PDF and HTML support should be fixed. I even had a PRC file created by Creator crash mine.

I just don't like adding expectations of new features and calling it a bug when those features are not implemented.

I agree they should improve/fix the current rendering apps to handle even more complex documents without problems.

I actually think they said that folder support would be included in the first update but I cannot find it so maybe I misremember or they removed the post.

If they do not have manpower to implement things why do they not open up the platform so other could contribute with extensions? Directory navigation is not something that have to be integrated with the reader for example.

I don't know, but I've wondered the same thing. Do you have the 538 firmware? If so, what do you have to lose by trying to flash it?

Unhappy

We call this firmware update "so much awaited" because the original firmwire has so much bugs and missing features, and a lot of future features are promised on their website, and Bookeen is so reluctant to let 3nd party contribute. We are pinned to an official blog and are at their mercy. All we can really do is just wait and hope. And this almost null update is what comes out.

Anyway it is just a device. Either live with it and enjoy, or leave it and disdain.

Without the SD card? It will only work from the SD card so I assume you tested that and that you did not put the file on the internal disk and tested with and without the SD card.

I don't have 538 but if I could get hold of it I would try it.

I did not word it very clearly but I meant that the fault does not depend on the SD card being installed or not. I updated the firmware following the Bookeen instructions with the update on the SD card.

With thanks to a forum member (some well deserved karma added) I have "downgraded" my Cybook to 538 and it is now working again.

I noticed that 538 is nearly 16MB whereas 685 is only just over 6MB. That's a big difference. Maybe this latest update should only be applied after 538 has been applied.

I will now attempt to re-flash 685 and see how it goes.

Thanks ProfJulie. I've also updated it to 685 again and it is still working.

I've added a description of the problem and what I did to fix it on the troubleshooting page of the Gen3 wiki.
