judge: To form an opinion or estimation of after careful consideration: judge heights; judging character. MrsJoseph estimated of after careful consideration that her friends wouldn't return borrowed books. That means that she judged them. On topic: The article from the OP doesn't say much. I've actually seen more on TorrentFreak. One of these things is that the study will be published in a paper called: “Music Downloads and the Flip Side of Digital Rights Management Protection”, so I guess that it doesn't relate directly to ebooks since it's pretty much about music. They do have a nice logo:

It's good to know that I rank so highly to you that you persist in being so very concerned about my friends and what I do with them. It's also very good to know that YOU know me so very well that YOU can state - without a shadow of a doubt - what I do. Yeah, really really good to know. Please, oh great swami, tell me something else about myself that only a stranger like you who has never set eyes on me can know. |

You seem to be missing out on the pleasure of reading comprehension. I believe most of us who have said we will not share books have said that we will, however, GIVE books--or money, or whatever--to other people. I think giving something outright is generous, but somehow you've decided that giving is an indication of miserliness.

See what DRM does people? It makes us fight among ourselves! DRM is evil.

Not only does it restrict the use of reading for people who buy it, while only giving a mild annoyance to any pirate that wants to crack it to share it... but it also splits us up and makes us fight each other! It's pure evil that needs to be exorcised! |

In my case, it means that I realized loaning books and then worrying about them and how or when or if they would be returned, was something that could be damaging to a friendship, and therefore it was something I should avoid doing. It has nothing to do with the behavior of others or with my expectations of their behavior--it's my own obsessive reaction that I am controlling by changing my own behavior. If it makes me nuts to lend a book, I won't lend the book. Simple.

![]() The thing with DRM on eBooks,as compared to music, movies and games, is that eBooks are comparatively new. The publishers haven't figured out how to do it yet... DRM in the other three I mentioned was garbage and stupid when they started experimenting with it as well. That and, as has been mentioned before, gamers are used to not being able to freely share and borrow games with friends, while we are very used to doing so with books. It's more of a culture shock not to be able to do it with an eBook than with a digital game copy. |

list was more to the fact that we share that point, it was just that I thought that I had been making it a number of times since page one of this thread. I guess it was an expression of frustration on my part, for my lack of impact with those earlier posts. To the extent that there may be a "pirate community" I guess what they would strive to be, would be the kind of real pirates that are able to create ebooks from very popular books prior to their release in pbook form. Once a viable copy is out there it gets spread around and there is little incentive for a real Pirate to duplicate what another pirate has done. It would make sense, to us, to wait until the official ebook release then remove the DRM, to do our Piracy, but by that time there would be some other Pirate gloating over their much earlier booty. The Harry Potter series has not yet been released in ebook form and yet they have been available on the net for years. Sorry, for any misunderstanding. And that raises a few interesting questions: Since it wasn't available in eBook form, did the first person that scanned the book in order to create an electronic copy, break/violate the "DRM" of their paper book? Since no eBook sales were lost, on account of them not being offered, is it still wrong to convert the books to a format easier for the owner to use? And if that was wrong, where does that leave the text-to-speak features of so many eReading devices today?
