Though not exactly standalone any more, as there's a sequel novella in the recent Trio of Sorcery collection that Lackey had out last year or the year before. All of Lackey's non-elf (and coincidentally better, though Knight of Ghosts and Shadows which is a freebie on one of the Baen promo CDs is quite good) urban fantasies are published by Tor, unfortunately, which is moderately slow about putting backlist stuff up (and tends to charge the higher prices for it, too). As for me, I've been re-reading more by Mercedes Lackey writing in conjunction with James Mallory, a skim of my 4th or 5th favourite series from her, the "Obsidian" books, for which there will apparently be another prequel trilogy to those coming out next year. Anyway, I've already re-read The Outstretched Shadow, which I actually got as a freebie when Tor.com first opened and was giving out free e-books (alas, no longer) and was one of the first new books I ever read when I first got my Kindle last year. Nearly done with To Light A Candle (in hardcover from the library) and will soon move on to When Darkness Falls (my own paper copy). I don't think I'll bother with the "a thousand years later" sequel trilogy even though I went and paid for those, too. That one was rather boring and I didn't like the characters nearly as much and the plotline was kind of a re-hash instead of something new and different emerging from the changed status quo at the end of the original trilogy. Currently reading The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt it’s an offbeat western about a reluctant assassin and his murderous brother. I was inspired to buy it after seeing sensualpoets awesome Scotiabank Giller Prize post. I’m really enjoying it, it's an easy read and funnier than I expected with bursts of violence sprinkled throughout. For some reason I keep thinking of the Cohen brothers as I read, it must be due to the random quirky characters that keep appearing. Recommended

I'm just starting Catherynne M. Valente's The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. So far it's brilliant. | |
