They sound like a rotten company to work for.

with all due respect, did they think warehouse work was supposed to be a cakewalk? just looks like unions using unsubstantiated claims to try to get a foothold in/inevitably destroy yet another successful business. here in america we see how awesomely our auto-manufacturers are doing thanks to unions. oh...wait...

i see a lot of "it felt like" "they felt" "they claimed" without an iota of proof.

if they think theyre mistreated they should look for another job, i'm sure someone would be happy to take their place. these whiners dont sound like theyre cut out for real work.

Not an excuse for bad practices, but there are people out there that would kill for those jobs.

In today's economy, there are people who would kill for any job, including one that paid $3 an hour. I don't find that sufficient justification for poor working conditions.

I know that many right-wingers in the U.S. would like to return to the days before there were labor laws, when children could be sent to the coal mines once they reached age 7 years and women could be locked in stifling factories that lack fire alarms, usable emergency exits, and water sprinklers -- all in the guise of free enterprise and too much government interference -- but the fact that people complain about working conditions yet continue to work under them does not mean that those conditions are figments of people's imaginations. I would think that Massey coal mine disaster would have disabused most people of the illogic that griping about conditions + continuing to work under them = false accusations.

I lived in Tokyo until Oct 1995 and I remember buying books from Amazon at that time because English language books were exorbitant in Japan. But you may be right, it could have been that last year. Just had a feeling it was before that, remember getting a plastic coffee mug as thanks for being a repeat customer and writing back to them saying that I'd preferred that they deduct shipping costs equivalent to what it must have cost them to ship that mug to Japan.

They sound like a rotten company to work for.
Even based on the *ten-year-old article* you linked to, they sound like any other warehouse job.

Quote:
Staff say strict quotas are imposed with a "picker" forced to select three items a minute from the warehouse's shelves and a "packer" to parcel an average 2.5 orders a minute.
Maybe this is outrageously high or something, but there's nothing in the article that supports this.
Quote:

One employee claimed they were required to push a trolley for what felt like up to 20 miles in a night to fill it with books and CDs named on computer-printed lists. The company said the distance was "nowhere like that".
Pushing a trolley and filling it with books and CDs from a computerized list doesn't really sound like something from Charles Dickens.
Quote:

The 11-hour night shift stretching from 7.30pm to 6.30am includes an unpaid one-hour meal break at 1am and Marston Gate has no canteen, staff taking in their own food or using vending machines. Two shorter rest periods, however, are paid.
The absence of a canteen doesn't sound particularly abusive, either
Quote:

The union said a standard 23 days' holiday included bank holidays, and the pay rate is £5.50 an hour plus a £1 hourly bonus for night staff who are rostered four shifts a week.
Again, not obviously horrible for warehouse work.

Right and they were vague and 10 years old. What's your real issue with Amazon, this thread is supposed to be about their recent earnings report.
