Stealing Souls by Ian Doyle-

"In Drummond, James Stark and his pretty wife Mina run a discreet inquiry agency and are used to laying their lives on the line to see that justice and the truth prevail. The city is rife with dark creatures, great monsters and men who are beasts, and fantastical foes live in the shadows, waiting for victims.

When a puppet knocks on their door in the dead of night claiming to be a real boy who has had his body stolen through black arts, James takes up his pistol and sets out to balance the scales. Mina accompanies her husband as they investigate the dangerous affair of the wooden boy. "

not a very long book but its insanely charming. i'm a grown man and several times i found myself going "awwwwww" over the plight of the poor puppet boy.

Finished Daniel Abraham's A Shadow in Summer (2006), the first in a quartet set in the same fantasy world. It reminds me of Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, insofar as both societies' rulers rely on captured gods as the basis of their power. Abraham's novel focuses more on the "les mains sales" aspect of maintaining or opposing power.

Just finished Old Man's War by John Scalzi. It used the space opera and military adventure model to explore the theme of what it means to be human. The regular soldiers were old men and women, each of whose consciousness was uploaded to a new, improved green body with enhanced abilities. The Special Forces were different: enhanced clones were born of volunteers who had died prior to becoming soldiers. Their minds were encoded from birth with information that allowed them to survive on the battlefield, but with no idea of who they were. Last names were assigned to them and their first names were chosen by them. A most fascinating concept, once I set aside the absurdity of battling extraterrestrials for territory. (The odds that any alien races we may one day encounter would be so evenly matched with our own technology as to make for a somewhat even military contest is most unlikely.)

Now it's on to A Canticle For Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller, November's MobileRead Book Club selection. I really wasn't thinking when I read Old Man's War about the genre this month being science-fiction. I hate to read two books in succession of the same type. Oh, well.

I had read John Scalzi's Old Man's War back in July and still haven't found the other books. I like how he wrote the book to be something that was just normal in that time period. You explained it better than me, Tom.

Thanks for reminding me about the books, Tom. I need to go find the other ones.

I am completely throwing out my previous plans for the rest of the year. Its just not working for me. I love, love, love reading series and have overwhelmed myself with options. In addition, I have downloaded so many freebies over the last year, its ridiculous. Many of them I don't even remember getting....

So my new "plan" is to read as many stand alone novels as I have time to enjoy...all chosen at random by Calibre. No series!

The first one up is Dark Legacy by Anna DeStefano.
