That will not be the case with ebooks that are stripped and copied.

I'm certainly no fan of DRM, but in this regard I can see the points that stonetools and HarryT made about casual sharing of ebooks.

I would suggest that we in the 'anti-DRM clan' should be careful about promoting such casual sharing. Once we start making arguments in favor of the same, it starts to color the other side's perception of us and causes them to dismiss our legitimate arguments.
I don't share books or ebooks nor do I promote sharing books. I am a book hoarder and I don't understand people who want to "share" books. I'd rather buy you your own copy than become someone's personal library system.

I agree. Although I would change it to "convince you to buy your own damn books" rather than being a source of free books.

Whether ebooks or pbooks, the idea of always sharing my books doesn't appeal to me. It's okay once in a while, but not on a regular basis, I think. I mean, why should I be the one who spends hundreds of dollars on books, and then give it to you for free?

That's sort of my approach to piracy, as well. Sure, I'm not a fan of copyright infringement; but if I'm being completely honest, my reasons for not distributing books is entirely selfish. Why should I provide for free something that I spent my hard earned money on?

You want books? Go get your own.

I'm pretty sure, now, that I must be on "afa"s ignore list. It has been my
contention that it goes against human nature to spend your own money to
provide for others, who just want something for free. (But then there are
Democrats, oh wait they want to spend other peoples money.) So there are
very few who would be giving away ebooks that they have purchased.

You want books? Go buy your own.

Luck;

I missed those references . TBH, I don't care what sex you are ( and I'm sure you feel likewise about me).

Well, I guess that's the best response you could make to my post. Oh well...

I am not believing all this crap. You people don't have any friends? You don't have any family? You don't have any neighbors? You don't give at church?

You don't loan your car or give a ride if someone has a car problem?
You don't load your tools?
You don't give presents?
You don't give your tickets to the game to someone else if you can't go?

This group is a bunch of stingy friendless greedy misers.

Before you feel you have the right to call ANYONE names...do you know my friends? No? So, who are you to sit in judgement?

Loan my car? No, I'll give you a ride. People don't pay for tickets they get in others cars.

Load Tools? No. I don't own any tools to load anywhere.

Give presents? Sure. But that's a GIFT and not a "loan."

GIVING someone something is a big difference than LOANING someone something and HOPING that they give it back.

I don't loan my books to ANYONE. This only excludes my mom and my husband. Experience has taught me this the hard way. I hope that you don't have to learn my lessons on your own but you know what they say:

It was the only part that deserved one.

Your posts still don't actually address any points that someone who disagrees with you is making. You over and over shown that you have absolutely no interest in anyone else's opinion because you already know that we're all despicable pirates anyway. So since responding to you any of your points has become a complete waste of bandwidth (not to mention redundant, since they're all garbled versions of "you're a pirate and you're evil", I decided not to waste any more time on them. The gender part was funny, so I replied to that.

When you start acting as if you want a mature and respectful discussion, you'll get one. Until then, you'll get as little as possible.

None of this is in any way relevant.

I have unfortunately discovered that that so few people I know read, and the few who do read in a very narrow range of genre's. So for me this discussion still boils down to this. Does the current system protect the reasonable property and use rights of all parties. I would say no. Does the current system deter pirates? No it can't even slow down pirates. Does it put my access to and use of my purchased product at risk, yes. Does it tend to encourage monopolisic behavior, yes. So the only real benefit is it allows each distributor to try and lock you in to buying what is basically a generic product only from them. They are not adding value only trying to limit your choices.

Are you reading the posts just on this page, or are you just trying to shrug these people's stinginess off.

For example, here are people being pretty clear about their miserly ways.

My guess is that if I look back at other pages, there will be more.

In fact are you claiming to have a different attitude. If so, I congratulate you. I wouldn't want to run with that crowd, and come up needing them to help me.

Oh, please add me to this distinguished list.

I am a book hoarder and you cannot have any of my books. Ever.

I will happily lend money or offer my time and assistance to a friend, or even to a person in need; I will buy someone else a book they want or I want them to have. But I will not lend my books.

you got a funny sense of stingy, as well as a warped sense of ethics and what is right and wrong.

I think twice, after losing a prized textbook, with my underlining and margin notes. It was my own extensive customization that made it important to me. I'll still loan a book, but only if I don't mind losing it. Or if the borrower is close family or friend.

Come to think of it, I'm more inclined to just give a book away, no strings attached, if it's one that I can stand to lose, and if I question the borrower's reliability.
