And math equations at best are included as images, but more often OCRed and end up a mess. (0's vs. the letter Phi, integral signs vs. S, oh my.) I'm really hoping the new format means that finally physics/math books are usable!

No sh**! I published a Kindle eBook that covers all the calculus equations necessary to pass the Amateur Radio Extra Class exam. All the math equations were created in a MS Word document then saved as a PDF. I then painstakingly did a screen capture of each equation, saved it into an image file, and used an IMG tag within the HTML to place it into the eBook. I bet there is a better way to do it, but that was what I came up with in 2008 when I created the book. Also, Kindle books have a tendency to require specific image sizes otherwise your images can get doubled resulting in pixelizations. I cannot remember the sizes to avoid but it is a pain to have to remember to do that. I wound up having to buffer the right edges of many images with white space to keep them from being doubled in size.

I know it's a pretty horrible hack, but you've done a good job with that!

Wow! That's better than ANY of the physics or math books I've downloaded free samples of! You know, if you ever write a quantum field theory ebook, I'll be first in line to buy it! :-)

Yesterday I asked amazon Kindle-support in Germany if the Kindle3 Keyboard will also support this format.
They don't know yet. Apparently the definition of "latest generation" is not clear to the support yet (may still be in the programmer's corner of amazon or it may not be decided yet or it may still reside in the US).

Ideally it would support MathML (as ePub3 will). But with embedded fonts, SVG, at least there will be some other options.

What Kindle format needs in addition for technical books is ePub-like navigation (for quicker navigation of TOC and other types of directories).

The world is coming to an end because I agree with you. But merge them into the news forum.
