New Sci-Fi/Steampunk Short From James S. Dorr: VANITAS
![]() About Vanitas: When he arrived at the New England town of Vanitas, all that Caleb Rushton wanted was an escape from the life of a seaman. What he found there included murder, a ghost-like apparition, a multi-layered trail of deception, and a need for his carpentry skills to help in the building of a gigantic church organ powered by steam. A great blend of steampunk and horror from our Orbits sci-fi/fantasy short story line. About Author James S. Dorr: James Dorr is a short story writer and poet working primarily in dark fantasy and horror with forays into mystery, science fiction, and various combinations thereof. He currently has two collections, Strange Mistresses: Tales of Wonder and Romance and Darker Loves: Tales of Mystery and Regret, from Dark Regions Press and a book of poetry, Vamps (A Retrospective), from Sam’s Dot Publications. Dorr also has three to four hundred individual appearances in magazines and anthologies in the US, Canada, Britain, France, Australia, Holland (forthcoming), and Brazil ranging from Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine to The Yellow Bat Review. Dorr has worked as a technical writer and editor, associate editor on a city magazine, a full-time nonfiction freelancer, and a semi-professional Renaissance musician. He has a cat, Wednesday, who’s into mousing and playing with spiders. For more information see http://jamesdorrwriter.wordpress.com . How to Purchase Vanitas: Vanitas is $1.50 from The Untreed Reads Store in a variety of formats, including PDF, EPUB and Kindle formats. You’ll also find the titles at virtually every ebook retailer around the world including Amazon, B&N, Apple, WHSmith and Waterstone’s. Where Dreams are Born, an e-book or print book from a small publisher.
It was supposed to be a win-win situation—a safe environment in which to raise a son for single mom Vicky, housekeeping and childcare for widowed Jack. Neither one wants or expects anything more. Life, however, has more in store than either one imagines. “Joyce DeBacco pens one of those tales that is warm and loving while still mixed with trials that will touch a reader's heart.” Dee Dailey of The Romance Studio |

When time is short, why not read something short? Midnight and Holding, my new short story collection contains stories of interest for wives and mothers everywhere. Men will also relate to them even though there’s no blood, gore, or ghosts.
Sometimes we wish we could stop the clock and rewind time. Maybe to savor a happy moment, take back words spoken in haste, or fulfill an ambition. Other times we want to turn the clock ahead, hopeful of better times or fortunes. Midnight and Holding is a collection of stories reflecting those desires. Total words: approximately 12,000. Rubies and Other Gems – A woman’s trip back in time puts her present problems in perspective. (This is the short that inspired my novel of the same name.) The Shed – A newly erected garden shed is the catalyst that reconnects a driven executive with his neglected wife and children. Harvey’s New Suit – A woman buys her husband his first new suit in years. Rainbow Years – A carefree youth calls to mind a woman’s own dreams and desires. Mad Dogs and Fishermen – A humorous account of an innocent suggestion taken to extreme. Midnight and Holding – A parent’s rite of passage. Last edited by joycedb; 10-26-2011 at 10:29 AM. |

I have published a Christian themed Mystery/Crime novel.
A Mystery/Crime novel titled “A Gatored Community”, written as a collaboration between the writer Andalib Marx and myself William D’Andrea, has just been published, and is available at lulu.com
The story concerns global warming, which has raised the sea level 30 feet, and people live in floating communities that rise and fall with the tides. In the floating community of Shellfish Shoals, a gang of thieves breaks into a local oyster farm, where cultured pearls are produced, and an alligator is used for security. The owner of the pearl farm is a committed Christian. He becomes involved with a woman who's a member of the gang. He eventually helps her find salvation, but not without great pain and suffering on both his and her part. The plot also involves “Social Justice” advocates, who bring animal rights protesters to Shellfish Shoals. They regard the people of Shellfish Shoals as “Benighted rubes and yahoos.” They claim that Ted is “torturing” the oysters at his pearl farm, and are threatening to “collapse the facility.” This is first of all an adventure story, addressed to the general reader, and not to a specifically Christian readership. The salvation of the woman pearl thief is just part of the story, but it is a significant part. The Lord is also present in the story, but not in any miraculous way. The natural order of things is not interupted in the course of the narrative. As I said, this book is available for purchase and can be found by logging on to the following: http://lulu.com/product/paperback/a-...unity/17813947 |

Hello!
We're offering 100 free eBooks - the first in a new travel series. Just go to our facebook page: http://tinyurl.com/facebookperspectives The first 100 friends will be invited to receive the free Book on their Kindle. We're after feedback so that we can improve the rest of the series - so here's the series concept: No matter where you travel, no matter where you find yourself - Perpectives Travel will find you the perfect short essay, letter, diary entry, film script, recipe or short story for you to read in Perfect Bitesize Chunks. WHATEVER you're interested in ... from History, Art, Science, Sport and Philosophy to Ghost Stories, Mysteries and Legends... .. And WHEVERER you are - Perspectives Travel Guides will be the perfect accompaniment to your travels. In a cafe in Paris? Why not read a witty essay by Mark Twain on what he thinks of French women, or a letter from Gustave Eiffel describing his new idea for a tower... On a trip to Washington? why not hear from the man himself and have a peak into George Washington's diary - see what he sees as the future of the United States. Find yourself in Hollywood? Why not read the first film script - you'll be surprised how short it is - or how about some love letters from Howard Hughes to Katharine Hepburn? If you're sitting in a garden in Florence you can read what Leonardo Da Vinci thought about the meaning of life - all in his own words! That's the beauty about this series - it doesn't tell you what to think about Da Vinci, it gives you his actual words - carefully selected to leave out the boring bits. So you can read direct from Da Vinci: How to Live Longer and How to Die Happy. He even tells you why the Sky is Blue and his prophecies for the future. There's a whole series - so you can be just about anywhere in the world and there'll be some magical piece of writing that would be perfect to read while you sit back and sip your cappuccino. You're in park by the Champs Elysees in Paris? Why not read one of Napoleon's letters to Josephine, and see why he loved her above all the others. You're in Berlin? How about reading one of Hitler's speeches - to understand just how he managed to beguile a nation and commit such horrors. At the Tower of London? How about a confession from Captain Blood, explaining exactly how he stole the Crown Jewels? Or read Churchill's description of the tower during the blitz. At the Pyramids in Egypt? then what about reading the Egyptian Book of the Dead? or a letter from Napoleon describing what happened when he slept overnight in the Chamber of Khufu... On a visit to the Scottish Highlands? Why not read George Spicer's sighting of the Loch Ness Monster - and see if you can spot any flaws in his story. In nepal? why not read the diary of a yeti-hunter You get the idea... I hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Please claim your free copy of the Florence & Tuscany Companion, and please give us some feedback and let us know what you think. In particular any suggestions of favourite authors and texts would be much appreciated! ![]() Humph |

Rubies and Other Gems - the Novel, Women's fiction with a time-travel twist.
Seeking relief from her unhappy family life, a woman travels back in time only to discover she may have put her future happiness at risk. Judith of The Book Binge says, "I would recommend this novel as one of those books that moves the reader through the days, months, and years of living, that open the reader's awareness to circumstances that, in this case, may be just a bit unique--how many of us get to be time travelers?...So be sure to read this novel--it will be well-worth your time. I know it held my interest from start to finish.” |
