If you use Adobe Digital Editions, and click "Download as ePub" after you buy the book from Kobo, it will be opened in Adobe Digital Editions after you click the .acsm link that you save.

I have the Nook for PC that works the same way as the Kindle for PC. It's on my laptop which is Wi-Fi. If I buy the book from B&N, where would I get a US shipping and billing address from? Do you have to pay for it?

You also say use a VPN. I do not know what that means, could you enlighten me and tell me what a VPN is and how I use it please?

I have found the 'sync' button on the Nook for PC.

Cheers for any answers.

CommonReader,

yes, I know it is available in Germany as I mention in one of my earlier posts. Firstly, where would I get a German billing address from?

I already thought about trying to purchase it this way. The information I got regarding this is, if I started a brand-new account in Germany, I would have to have a bona fide German address. (Or have another address from there if I had residences in both Germany and the UK).

I was also informed that because I was a member of the U.K. site, by reregistering on the German site and then downloading the book from here, I would lose all my original books in my UK library.

Please tell me what to do and I will be ready to give it a go.

Thanks

HB
A VPN routes all your Internet traffic through a VPN server, in this case one in the US. This will give your PC a US IP-address, and because of this the B&N system will think you are located in the US. A popular free one is Hotspot Shield.

You can use any valid US address as shipping and billing addres. Just google something, for example a hotel in New York.

Use your PC to buy the book. First start Hotspot Shield so you have an US IP-address. Than go to the B&N website, and buy the book. After you bought the Book you can use Nook for PC to download it.

If you want to buy the book from Kobo you need to Install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your PC, and register with Adobe. Use your PC to go to the Kobo website and buy the book. After you have bought the book it is in the library of your Kobo account. There you can download it. Choose to open the file (not to save it). This will trigger ADE to download the book. You can read the book in ADE.

Agency ebooks add sales tax, but there are fives states with no sales tax (Wiki: Sales taxes in the United States) so find an address in Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, or Oregon.

Okay, this is the situation thus far. I downloaded Hotspot Shield (deleted all the crap that comes with it such as free games and a toolbar etc). I found a US address in Delaware on the Internet as advised.

I changed my original address in the Barnes & Noble register information to that of the US address. I then started Hotspot Shield. I then went to my Nook for PC and clicked 'Shop.' I then brought up the e-book that I wanted. I tried to buy it but it brought up a notice saying, 'the billing address does not match the credit card. Please choose another billing address or try another card.'

So that did not work. Have I done anything wrong doing it this way? I thought I followed the steps advised in the previous posts.

Next, I downloaded the Adobe Digital Edition. I need to ask a question here. I needed to sign up with this software using an e-mail address, password and personal details such as address.

The question is, do I have to use a US address here when signing up to this piece of software? Or do I just sign up as normal for the Kobo with my real address for this to work?

Any pointers to where I've gone wrong and other answers will be appreciated.

Thanks

Do not use Nook for PC to buy the book. Go to the B&N website and buy the book there. That should work.

geertm,

Perhaps it's me! This isn't working out too well!

Okay, tell me if this is supposed to happen and I am doing it right.

First thing I did is open Hotspot Shield. There is a message at the top that is saying, 'Congratulations! Your session is now safe and secure with Hotspot Shield, world's only FREE VPN Software.

I am assuming that I should search Barnes & Noble from here, is this the case? Then order the book from the website this way?

I did this and clicked 'Search' from the Hotspot Shield page. I also tried it by clicking 'Web' on the same page.

It then went to another window as expected but nothing was loading up on this window and showing any results. I don't know why this is. Any ideas why?

I ought to point out that I am also doing a couple of scans at the same time. So far, I have found some malware in the scan that is still going on from the malwarebytes anti-malware program that I use. Could this be preventing the Hotspot Shield from showing any results at the moment, why these scans are running?

Also, the question about signing up to the free Adobe Digital Editions that is for use with the Kobo. Should I sign up with this using a US billing address or my own?

Answers to both of these questions will be appreciated.

Thanks (sorry for being a pain).

After starting Hotspot Shield just open your regular browser and go to www.bn.com and buy the book. The Hotspot Shield window is for showing advertising (that is why the program is free).

Just register ADE with your regular address. This is your Adobe registration.

geertm,

I did what you said and I really thought it had gone through this time. I checked my orders from my account and it gave today's date (it had never done this before).

In the orders section, next to today's date, it gave an order number and the price of $7.99. Then it read, 'Unable to ship. Please call 1-800-the book for assistance.

At the bottom, it read; 'Your expected ship date will be updated approximately 60 minutes after order placement.' I was also informed I would receive an e-mail confirming the order as of which, I have not received yet. Perhaps it will not go through until I receive the e-mail confirmation. I looked in the Nook app, but it wasn't there yet. I will keep you informed if anything develops here. Is it just a case of waiting now until I receive their confirmation e-mail?

One thing I want your advice with. It showed in my account settings for B&N that my address was the US address that I used to replace my real address when I edited my personal details. Is this correct or should I have just left it alone with my real address? Would this have made any difference?

Another point I need clearing up now. I have now fully registered with Adobe Digital Editions. I have also registered with the Kobe website. When I brought up the book in here, it was showing in pounds sterling because my address is in the UK I gather. This looks promising.

Just to clear this up, kobo have their own e-reader app for PC. Do I need to download this, or when I buy a book from this site, all I need is the Adobe Digital Editions software and it will download to here. To clarify, I won't need to download Kobe's own e-reader app for PC?

If you can answer these questions for me that would be brilliant.

Although not quite there yet, I feel I am making gradual process.

I appreciate all your help.

Thanks

When you purchase from Kobo you can either download the ePub file using ADE or you can use the Kobo Desktop app and use the sync option to read the kepub file.
Actually you can do both and decide whether you prefer to read via ADE or the Kobo Desktop.

But if you are happy with ADE and don't want to download the Kobo Desktop then you don't need to.

Okay, success at last!!!

I managed to do it from the Kobo website using a US billing address. I did not need to use Hotpoint Shield. Once downloaded, it went straight into my ADE.

Thank you, thank you all for your patience and help.

Here's my next question. (Yes there is more).

I would like to transfer it from ADE to Calibre, which I also have. I find it easier to read in there and it gives me more options.

Can anybody give me an answer to this one?

Cheers

I'm not in front of my PC at the moment but from memory ADE stores it's books under My Documents/My Digital Editions. So just open up calibre click import books and navigate to My Documents/My Digital Editions and select the book.

In Calibre the button is actually called "Add Books" rather than import books but other than that ALF (or melmac) has remembered very well!

I know you got the ebook via Kobo, but I thought I'd address some your questions, anyway. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I've had issues with B&N, as well. Technically, the method mentioned by others *should* work; when it comes to B&N, however, they don't always for me. I've had a few ebooks that I managed to purchase from B&N (well, only one was an actual purchase, the others were free) but I've also had several that refuse to download either to my Nook or to my Nook for Mac. It seems like a hit-or-miss kind of thing.

One thing I can confirm, though, is that method seems to work with the Kindle US store without a hitch. I've purchased several ebooks from there and never had an issue.

Probably. You need to have a valid US billing address in your info to buy anything from them.

As others have said, it really makes no difference. Use whichever software you find easier and more enjoyable. I assume the Kobo s/w will have an advantage in that the ebooks should be synced automatically with your account.

Yes, I managed to add the book in Calibre via "Add Books" as recommended. The problem I have got now is, when in Calibre, when trying to open the book, it is telling me it is DRM protected and a great big padlock shows. I cannot read it because of this.

I was told of Apprentice Alf's Blog for the stripping of DRM using various plug-ins in Calibre. I have successfully used some of the plug-ins to work with other certain formats.

There is a plug-in that strips the DRM in ADE and I have installed this within Calibre as per the README files from Alf's blog. Unfortunately, I'm still being told that the book is DRM protected even though the plug-in is definitely there.

Is there something else that I should do and have I missed something?

Cheers
