Just finished Anathem by Neal Stephenson and loved it. I know some people have struggled with it saying it's boring, particularly the early chapters, but for whatever reason I enjoyed it from start to finish. It's been a while since I've read fiction that really, truly made me think and explore ideas that were entirely new to me. Isn't that what science fiction should be? Told through what to me was a very interesting story with characters that weren't as flat as you see in a lot of scifi. Very good stuff, but now I'm left with a dilemma: I don't know what to read next! |

Just read (due to mention in another thread) Ray Bradbury's short story "The Fire Balloons" While it was a good story with some interesting ideas, certainly not one of his best IMHO. One of Ray's guidelines is that one should write a story every day, this one reads like one of those. |

Next up: A freebie (well, it was when I got it!). Cotillion by Georgette Heyer. Great fun so far. Interesting characters and wonderful use of language. | |

I just finished Scavengers by Cynthia Echterling. It was a great story that was hampered by a distinct lack of proof-reading. I've reviewed it on my site. |

Not even sure where to start for my next read. In addition to my regular authors, the following authors have been recommended in the last month or so. Gary Ponzo- Nick Bracco series. Read them both. Awesome! If you like thrillers, you should like this author. David Levien- Frank Behr series, have read the first book of 3 City Of The Sun. Another very good thriller. David Merrill (First Blood)- not yet read. John D. McDonald- Travis McGee series, have read Bright Orange For The Shroud. Number 6 in the series. Will definitely go back and start from the beginning. Walter Mosley- Easy Rawlins and Leonid McGill series. I'll be reading all of his series. Ed McBain (Evan Hunter)- 87th Precinct series, early cop mysteries. Have not yet read. |

I've heard so much about 1Q84 that I'm tempted to buy it, but at a healthy 944 pages, I'm not sure I'm ready to commit. It's available now for pre-order at Amazon.

I think you'll love it. Every book in the series is better than the one before it. The third and final one completely blew me away.
