Mat Brinkley walks into a bar, a bar he goes to every night. It's seedy, but so is Mat. Before he has a chance to order, a man sits down next to his right and says, "Three martinis," but before Mat can turn to thank the stranger, another man to his left (who had glided in like a tumbleweed on a slight breeze) says, "Thanks." Mat looks to his left and right, a quick back-and-forth movement - and sees himself on either side. "We haven't much time," both Mats say to the Mat in the middle. "Forces are already gathering and one of us is going to die." Run with it. Or better yet, walk to your nearest bar and have a drink....on me. Don

The door creaks slowly open and a figure stands shrouded in the darkness. He takes one wary look around the bar. Cold wind filters through the crack. As he steps through the door, the bartender looks up, his hands frozen in mid-polish. They share an uneasy look. The door slams shut and the figure creeps closer. |

The bartender's 7 year old daughter comes in the back door, unaware of any tension in the room. "Lucinda, go find your mother," the bartender orders. He places the half-polished glass on the shelf behind him without taking his eyes off the creeping figure. All three Mats push their martinis away and prepare to stand. "I'm not Lucinda, Dad! Can't you get it right?" As she speaks, the girl notices the stranger. "Lucinda, Susan, Katey -- whichever you are, go! Now!" The bartender barks. |

But the point of this is not to make something great, and most of what is produced in this event could very well suck.

The only way (I'm told) for your writing to start not sucking is to do lots of it. I think that's one of the aims of NaNoWriMo: to get people to actually start and finish something, so that the next thing will be better.

I am thinking of joining, even though I would write in Spanish and this event seems to be catered to English speakers. I am too self-critical and that usually prevents me from writing anything, so this event sounds like a fun opportunity to write without caring too much about the output. Too bad I am going to be really busy this month. Maybe I can set a lower goal, like 20,000 words or something like that. That would be a lot for me. Anybody else writing in a language other than English? |

I write very well in gibberish... if you need pointers, just ask! VyderScope, now there's a warm suggestion... And pdurrant, you are right, self pity is stupid. And wastes writing time (what little there is...lol!). |
