Sounds like it could be something by Stephen King, but I would have no idea what as my only exposure to King's books has been through film adaptions; Carrie, The Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption. I know it is none of those.

Very good poohbear. It's the Haunting of Hill House, which is arguably one of the two greatest haunted house stories of all time. Matheson's Hell House is the other one and I'm not picking which one is the best.
