I do have it on an elevated stand thing, so it only has something touching in about six places...however, the idea of the metal cooling rack wicking away some of the heat is also intriguing! (I decorate cakes, and I can imagine that frosting wouldn't be too good for the laptop! ) In either case, you all are VERY much appreciated!

I had the OP's problem, too. I tried converting books individually, or even in batches of two or three, and it worked fine. All of the replies seem to be spot on ... except for one thing ...

... I overwork my PC all the time, and no other program results in my computer completely shutting down. That includes rendering and conversion of 3d, audio, and video, as well as hardcore gaming.

What that means to me is that the makers of Calibre fail to protect against certain conditions that these other programs do.

So, contrary to this being perceived as a "personal problem" (hardware), I consider this a software bug.

That it may, but the bug would be in one of the many building blocks that Calibre is built upon.
FWIW most of my OLD computers have a Over temp CPU throttle(down) that kicks in if things get too warm.

Since calibre does not have any kernel mode code, no bug in calibre code could possibly cause your computer to shutdown.

Preventing a shutdown due to your machine exceeding cpu temps is not calibre's responsibility, "these other programs" are just not as efficient as calibre in its ability to fully use your cpu.

You might consider any of the following; checking your bios to see if it has a setting for what to do at a certain cpu temperature; check to ensure your smart fan settings in your bios are set to increase fan speed at an appropriate temperature; clean out the dust in your machine; buy and install a better heat sync/cooling fan; turning off or scaling back any overclocking you may have enabled or if you haven't setup any overclocking you might want to throttle your clock speed back to a level that the existing heat sync/fan can adequately cool.

You can consider it a software bug all you want, but you are unequivocally wrong.

you can change calibre settings for number of threads & Job priority - in preferences.

it IS a hardware issue but that will work around it. set it to run a v low priority.
