Porting CWM to the Edge

nikkie why don't you contact the guy who did the CWM code. According to his blog you linked in the first post, he is in Seattle, WA and you are in Redmond, WA (at least according to your profile). Aren't they close? Perhaps he can be of assistance. If I ever get my other PEs power switch fixed I'll send him my PE to see if he can get it working on the PE.

It is difficult for me to port recovery for a device I don’t have. So, people can attempt to port it using this guide. However, if you want it done properly, and probably quicker, you can loan the device to me personally at:

I've tried. He doesn't reply to his blog apparently, and I tried to contact him on twitter but haven't gotten any response. It'd be a bit weird to go knock on his door.

I just realized. This device already has a backup kernel. There's no need to port clockwork mod unless we really want - we really just need to hack the existing updater application to reflash with whatever we have. There's ALREADY an additional kernel available to run things, the maintenance kernel. So I think as a first step, tomorrow, I'm going to start looking through the source to find the updater code (if they open sourced that bit), and then see if we can just use that to see if we can hack that kernel into a clockwork style interface.

Also i think the main reason people were hoping for clockworkmod was to be able to pull the rom off the device....i could be wrong though..im just a n00b

The updater is just a shell script. it looksl ike they didn't go with an android-standard updater format (binary+script). In the standard format, the script is written in an android-specific language and the binary executes the script. In this format it just boots to an alternate OS (which just happens to be another linux) and runs a shell script.

That's how I did allmine; I just modified the shell script to also unzip my zip files after the standard ones (which I removed), and then do a few bits of kludgery to glue the mess together.

So yeah, I think you're on to something here.

Perhaps he is referring to the update.sh script that gets executed. If you unzip the update.zip there is an update.sh file within.
