So your examples of the typical non-technical user are not impacted by DRM because they're buying non-DRM content?

I would assume that the average eBook consumer is most likely reading content from the mainstream publishing industry, which means it's almost always DRM'd. That means that the choice of what bookstore they purchase their content from has been taken away from them.

They may not understand why or how they no longer have a choice in where they shop, but it's certainly an impact.

Well, the paperback has already been purchased.

I have to admit that this is my...3rd copy of the paperback. One of my favorite books of all time. I just wasn't up to doing my own OCR.

I haven't dug into it, but from what I gather, the condition is that they then destroy the pbook you send to be scanned.

Here's their explanation, which - although I haven't researched it - could well hold water, legally:

The only place I've been really leery of buying books from is Google. I can hardly ever tell what format their books are in. Is this epub, mobi, .PDF, cloud reading only, html?

I have Google Books on my 950, but have actually never used it. I found some pretty extensive FAQs from them though.

Supported devices Looks like "any that can do ePub" to me...

Transfer book to device. Looks like they expect you to have/use ADE for Adobe formats. Link for "other devices" at the bottom.

Formats and DRM. Fuzzy on the DRM. As I understand that part they honor the publishers who want to use DRM, and have no DRM on public domain books. Not sure what this one would be.

I had no problem getting a refund from Google when a book I purchased was an unreadable mess on my reader.

Well, when I clicked "learn more" and then "eBooks," I got this:
