Beside that this is also a matter of time. How many people that have been reading ebooks for lets say 5 years could be described by the definition that you gave for TU? How many that are TU today will be SU next year? How many of them don't know somebody that can do the sophisticated work for them?
I was a TU over a year ago when I first got my Sony, but before I purchased I became a member here to do my research. I was one of those who couldn't understand the big tado over drm, didn't know about Calibre, coverting formats, etc.

Now here we are closing in on two years, and I now have Calibre installed, detest drm with a passion, and now know how to strip it in order to keep my books.

I'm a 50 year old woman, who values her books & the money she has invested in them, who slowly but surely has changed her mind about drm, and was willing to learn how to circumvent it to keep her investment in her books. I don't share them, not interested in uploading them.

Removing DRM from ebooks in a pretty simple and painless process in the main, once you learn how the procedure works. Google assists greatly and armed with Alf in a Can, de-lousing is an instant operation after purchase of an ebook.

Everyone I know is quite dextrous with said can, including my mostly computer illiterate sister, who still refers to her computer as "the hard drive"

I think that DRM plus the DMCA keeps ebook prices higher than they might otherwise be. If the DMCA were not around, I think that DRM might have some marginal effect on prices, but only marginally because users would be able to buy DRM stripping software legitimately.

That's why I think that the purpose of DRM is not to prevent piracy.

I organize mine by location. Kind of like I used to keep different books I was reading at different places.

And I also segregate my reading - i.e., different genres go on different EBRs. In fact, I find that I use my KDX to read articles & pdfs, but not books at all.

Yes, that's true, but that doesn't mean that you can only get books from Amazon, of course. There are many sources for DRM-free Mobipocket books, which the Kindle can read absolutely fine. I buy lots of books for my Kindle from Baen, for example.

I don't think so. One of the good things about ereaders is the fact that you can have all of your books on one device. Realizing when you travel that the book you wanted to read is on the reader left at home wouldn't be much fun.

That's what the "cloud" and syncing across devices is for.

Harmon was saying that people would be able to get more devices and not worry about DRM and the fact that not all the books will be read by the same device. So the "cloud" and syncing wouldn't help.

Dang it!!!! Yall stop getting my hopes up, lol! I really really really want an ecopy of this book but none of these links are working. It looks like it was available at one time but all of them have been pulled. Maybe it was a 1984-like situation with a non-authorized copy? Rights reverting back to the author? What happened???

"Maybe the old ones have been pulled in preparation for the new, fantastic, overhauled version due out any time?" said Mr. Optimism.
