@Kovid, While reviewing this error, I noticed that the metadata in every epub book in my library is screwed up. I did a epub to epub conversion on all of these with calibre version 0.8.20

Specifically the metadata screwed up in the epubs:

Title: contains random characters
Author: Unknown
Publisher: Hello World

Tags, ISBN and comments and Book Producer: calibre (0.8.20) [http://calibre-ebook.com] are fine.

I never noticed because all of this info is fine when sent to device.

Update: If I set the Read metadata from file contents under Preferences - Adding books then all metadata is inserted in the book during conversion except for Publisher, that still says Hello World. If it is unchecked then I get garbage for Title and Author.

Maybe it has to do with the Quick preferences plugin?

Update: I removed quick preferences plugin, restarted, tried again. Any conversion with the Read metadata from file contents box unchecked inserts garbage for title and author.

Final Update: I wiped out my configuration settings and started fresh and everything works as expected.

The good news is the cover problem persists so that fix you created had nothing to do with my other errors.

So after resetting your preferences, conversions are no longer outputting incorrect metadata in title/author/publisher. If you are able to figure out what combination of settings caused the issue, let me know.

I caused the issue.

It seems many many moons ago I experimented with your Hello World plugin instructions and left my attempt installed in my plugin directory. Once removed I restored my old Calibre Settings directory and everything is now fine. No matter how hard you try, we can't be protected from ourselves or in this case I can't be protected from myself.

At least you figured it out. I was getting nervous thinking there was some combination of settings that could cause weird metadata to appear in books.

I'm glad to know that cover update will work in the next release.

Thanks guys for figuring it out and fixing it!

Question

Hi. For my needs I have the exact opposite problem, as I need to send my ebooks (ePub) to my reader keeping the original epub cover, that is, NOT changing it with the metadata calibre cover. I'd like Calibre to send only the metadata cover as a thumbnail, keeping the inside epub cover.

While I play with the interface complement options for my Sony, there seems not to be any option for the above. How can I keep the first-page cover of the epub if it's not the same as the one in the Calibre metadata?

Thanks.

I'm not sure this has come up before or is an option. If you want the cover that is embedded in the book then use that cover in calibre as well. You can set the book cover as the library cover from the Edit metadata window.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. There are some situations in which it'd be useful to have the option I described:

- Maybe you have a very low resolution original-cover of the book, so you want to keep it as a thumbnail, but instead have a custom high resolution cover for the embedded one.

- Often we have the cover in our own language but very pixelated. So we keep that cover for the thumbnail but insert a bigger cover with more quality but in another language in the epub.

So the question is if there is any method to keep the embedded cover and transfer only the different thumbnail from the metadata when you upload ebooks to the reader.

Regards.

It seems you have thought it out well, put in an enhancement request so the idea doesn't get lost and maybe it will be implemented.
