^^ I'm the OP and I'm jumping into the Bones discussion

IIRC the Temperance in Bones is a fictionalized version of Kathy Reichs. She's an anthropologist who who's also a mystery author who writes books about a character named Kathy Reichs. I haven't followed the show since the second season though.

@alanspace: I've actually sampled Women's Murder Club (both book and show) I don't think it really fits what I'm looking for. I put Holmes and Monk in the OP for a reason. I'm looking for a female character in that tradition.

Now that I've thought about it I think reading about the new show 'Unforgettable' was what got me thinking about this. I've read some reviews/comments that mention that the show didn't really show how messed up a person with perfect memory can be. It got me wondering if there's a lady-Monk character out there.

I am unfamiliar with the show Unforgettable, but you may be interested in an upcoming book by Alison Gaylin, titled And She Was. It is apparently the first in a planned series featuring a heroine who has perfect memory.

Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series. Main character served as a nurse in WWI and has transcended some class barriers to become a psychological investigator.

Laurie King's Mary Russell and Kate Martinelli series. Mary is introduced as an orphaned American teenager who befriends a retired Sherlock Holmes. Kate is a San Francisco detective in a lesbian relationship.

I recommend this series. The TV show was unfortunately impacted by the big strike, otherwise it might have had enough momentum to continue. It had some good actresses, and I have a hard time not picturing them when I read the books (even though I starting reading the books before the TV show).

These are CHARACTER names, right? It might be helpful to the OP to include the author's names if you know them.
Guess I missed the part where the op asked for authors. Or the forum rules where it is required.

Generally I do post the authors but it was late at night and I was going from memory and trying to be helpful.

Oh well! Beside your shining self I am a poor excuse for a human being and deserve to get yelled at Snivel Snivel, Whine Whine.

The first few books are $7.99 right now on Amazon, which isn't bad, however I found this: The Women's Murder Club Novels, Volumes 1-3 for $19.99. The only thing, is that there are absolutely no reviews or other activity and it lists a second author, which makes me a bit wary. It is also showing as being added to Amazon, before 1st To Die was added.

Monk is such an eccentric character that it's hard to imagine a similar series, although I'd be interested in one with a Lady-Monk character too.

Since you mentioned Holmes, you might like the Mary Russell series by Laurie R. King starting with The Beekeeper's Apprentice.

I started with this series when I purchased a 5-book bundle. After that I've borrowed them from my local library. Many of Patterson's books have collaborating authors which is how he's so prolific. Most of the books in this series are with Maxine Paetro (except the first few) so the writing is consistent.

Oh no! Another interesting series...ahhhhh! too many books, not enough time (or money).

Ah, okay. The lack of participation on the page made me nervous. Maybe there aren't that many new comers to the series willing to grab 3 at one go.

It is now on my wish list. thank you, again.

Have you read any of Laurie R. King's Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell series, starting with The Beekeeper's Apprentice? It's scholarly and wonderful- Sherlock befriends a young girl and instructs her in solving mysteries.

I also agree with the recommendation for M C Beaton's Agatha Raisin books- a high powered advertising exec retires to the Cotswolds and gets embroiled in murders- Agatha is stubborn, proud and quirkly- books are quite funny.

And if you are interested in historical mysteries with female protagonist, try Crocodile on the Sandbank- Amelia Peabody- a spinster before turn of the century, is left a fortune when her father dies and decides to go to Egypt. Funny as heck.

Oops I forgot the author of Crocodile on the Sandbank- it's Elizabeth Peters (she also writes romantic mysteries, but they are more traditionally romantic- the Egyptology series is tongue in cheek.)

I'll put in for the Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. Very good books. I've read the first 7 of 9 (10 if you count the free short story).

Give them a go and you won't be sorry at all.

Here's what wikipedia says:

Quote:
Created by Hart Hanson, the series is very loosely based on the life of author and forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs,[1] who also produces the show. Its title character, Temperance Brennan, is named after the protagonist of Reichs' crime novel series. Conversely, Dr. Brennan writes successful mystery novels based around a fictional (in the Bones universe) forensic anthropologist named Kathy Reichs.
So it's the Kathy Reichs show but they used her popular character's name.

I have no idea. I'm just basing my opinion on reviews and some of the previews on youtube. Not really interested in the way the show executes the concept.

@catlady: Will look into the Alison Gaylin book, thanks.

Ah, okay, got it. I knew Brennan wrote on the show, but I did not realize that her novels' main character was Kathy Reichs.

Okay. Poppy Montgomery (the actress who plays the main character) was a little stiff in that first episode, but I found the concept interesting.
