^^ I'm the OP and I'm jumping into the Bones discussion
![]() IIRC the Temperance in Bones is a fictionalized version of Kathy Reichs. She's an anthropologist who who's also a mystery author who writes books about a character named Kathy Reichs. I haven't followed the show since the second season though. @alanspace: I've actually sampled Women's Murder Club (both book and show) I don't think it really fits what I'm looking for. I put Holmes and Monk in the OP for a reason. I'm looking for a female character in that tradition. Now that I've thought about it I think reading about the new show 'Unforgettable' was what got me thinking about this. I've read some reviews/comments that mention that the show didn't really show how messed up a person with perfect memory can be. It got me wondering if there's a lady-Monk character out there. |

Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series. Main character served as a nurse in WWI and has transcended some class barriers to become a psychological investigator.
Laurie King's Mary Russell and Kate Martinelli series. Mary is introduced as an orphaned American teenager who befriends a retired Sherlock Holmes. Kate is a San Francisco detective in a lesbian relationship. |

Generally I do post the authors but it was late at night and I was going from memory and trying to be helpful. Oh well! Beside your shining self I am a poor excuse for a human being and deserve to get yelled at ![]() Helen |

Since you mentioned Holmes, you might like the Mary Russell series by Laurie R. King starting with The Beekeeper's Apprentice. Quote:

Have you read any of Laurie R. King's Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell series, starting with The Beekeeper's Apprentice? It's scholarly and wonderful- Sherlock befriends a young girl and instructs her in solving mysteries.
I also agree with the recommendation for M C Beaton's Agatha Raisin books- a high powered advertising exec retires to the Cotswolds and gets embroiled in murders- Agatha is stubborn, proud and quirkly- books are quite funny. And if you are interested in historical mysteries with female protagonist, try Crocodile on the Sandbank- Amelia Peabody- a spinster before turn of the century, is left a fortune when her father dies and decides to go to Egypt. Funny as heck. |

Oops I forgot the author of Crocodile on the Sandbank- it's Elizabeth Peters (she also writes romantic mysteries, but they are more traditionally romantic- the Egyptology series is tongue in cheek.)

I'll put in for the Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. Very good books. I've read the first 7 of 9 (10 if you count the free short story).
Give them a go and you won't be sorry at all. |

Okay. Poppy Montgomery (the actress who plays the main character) was a little stiff in that first episode, but I found the concept interesting. |
